According to the draft Resolution of the National Assembly Standing Committee on administrative unit arrangement, it is expected that 52 provincial-level administrative units will be merged nationwide, including Ho Chi Minh City.
According to statistics, by 2023, Ho Chi Minh City will have a natural land area of 2,098 km2, accounting for only 0.6% of the country's area. However, this city is the largest economic center, contributing significantly to the national GDP.
According to the General Statistics Office, the scale of GRDP (gross regional product) at current prices of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024 will reach nearly 1.78 million billion VND - ranking No. 1 in the country. Compared to the figure of 919,025 billion VND in 2015, the city's GRDP has nearly doubled, equivalent to an increase of 93.5% in 10 years.
Over the past decade, Ho Chi Minh City's GRDP has always grown steadily, except for 2021 when it recorded a significant decline due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, but immediately regained momentum in the following year.
Regarding the structure of GRDP at current prices, there is a shift in some areas.
Specifically, in 2015, the GRDP of agriculture, forestry and fishery accounted for 0.73% of the city's total GRDP, but by 2023 it had decreased to 0.52%; industry and construction also decreased from 25% to 21.99%.
Meanwhile, the service sector increased from 61.66% to 64.83%, while the product tax minus product subsidy sector edged up 0.05 percentage points to 12.66%.
Regarding GRDP per capita in 2023, Ho Chi Minh City will reach 170.6 million VND/person/year, 67.7 million VND higher than the national average of 102.9 million VND/person/year.
In the period 2015-2023, the average GRDP per capita of Ho Chi Minh City increased by nearly 6.7 million VND/year, but only ranked 4th after Ba Ria - Vung Tau , Quang Ninh and Hai Phong.
Notably, Ho Chi Minh City's export turnover always leads the country, even though there were times when it slowed down.
Specifically, in 2019, the locality's exports reached more than 42.5 billion USD and increased sharply to 47.55 billion USD in 2022 - the peak in the period from 2019-2024.
In 2023, export turnover will decrease to 42.46 billion USD and then regain growth momentum in 2024, reaching nearly 47 billion USD, still maintaining the position of the locality with the highest export turnover in our country.
In terms of attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), Ho Chi Minh City has always been among the top localities in the country. Although FDI capital has fluctuated over the past decade, this source of capital has always reached several billion USD each year, ranging from 3.9 to 8.34 billion USD.
In 2023, with nearly 5.99 billion USD, Ho Chi Minh City will lead in attracting FDI, accounting for 16.3% of total registered FDI capital in Vietnam.
Meanwhile, domestic budget revenue will reach VND302,419 billion in 2023, an increase of 90% compared to VND159,112 billion in 2015.
