Five years of accession to WTO: Achievements and Challenges

Vietnam has in the past five years attracted a lot of foreign investment thanks to the stable and transparent environment. Export has seen a continuous increase with export turnover after five years increasing by 97.7% in 2011 to obtain USD 96.3 billion.
On this occasion, a seminar themed “Five years of accession to WTO – Vietnam’s businesses, trade and services in integration and development” was jointly held by the website of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Industry and Trade magazine in Ho Chi Minh City on February 17, 2012.
Economic experts and about 200 delegates representing the State managerial agencies, industrial associations, importers and exporters had attended the event. They had also exchanged their experience and assessment of challenges and difficulties lying ahead. On the other hand many of them had talked about the opportunities brought about by having joined WTO to develop business and production, turning challenges and difficulties into opportunities and successful integration in the regional and world economy.

Many ideas had been contributed to renovating the economic structure alongside the renovation of the growth model, stabilization of macro economy, treatment to inflation, trade deficit and consolidation of the managerial abilities and the dynamism in the monetary-financial system and investment. It is also necessary to continue to build and perfect the mechanism and policy alongside the administrative reform, strong investment in education and training so as to be able to be proactive in implementing the policies in accordance with the integration roadmap.
In the past five years, Vietnam has amended and built 86 laws, creating conditions to develop the socialist-oriented market economy, in conformity with the WTO’s principles. Vietnam has attracted strongly foreign investment thanks to the stable and transparent environment. Vietnam’s export has seen continuous increase after five years with export turnover in 2011 increasing by 97.7% to obtain USD 96.3 billion. The distribution and retail sale services have developed vigorously with the coming into being of a lot of supermarkets and trade centers and hundreds of convenience stores, changing the image of retail sale trade and changing the purchasing habits of consumers in the direction of civilization and modernity, making a considerable contribution to the economic and social development of the country./.
