On the 1st May 1930, the communist flag of My Loi party cell was flying on top of My Loi Village’s communal house. This was the first Party flag seen hung up in Thua Thien - Hue.
In the past two wars of national defense, My Loi was a bastion of the revolution. My Loi village has been awarded the title “Hero of the People's Armed Forces” by the State.
My Loi communal house is also the place where many important cultural and historical values of the country are kept and it was recognized as national historical - cultural – architectural relic site in June 1996.
In particular, this is where a document in Han script made 250 years ago is kept, affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago.
The document relating to the settlement of a litigation of An Bang ward (presently An Bang village, Vinh An commune, Phu Vang district) and My Loi village, on the 19th day of the 9th month of the 20th year of Canh Hung reign (the 6th November 1759) on the dispute between the two villages involving a boat and money allowances for the team of boats rendering services to the Hoang Sa archipelago.
The content of the document shows that 250 years ago, the Nguyens sent troops to Hoang Sa for the defense of the archipelago.
The document relating to Vietnam's sovereignty in My Loi village was handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the People's Committee of Thua Thien - Hue province for supplementing to the record on Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago.
My Loi is also a large market influencing the trade and life of residents in 5 communes in quarter 3, Phu Loc district, which is not inferior to Vinh Thanh or Sia markets, the famous “countryside markets" in the land of Thua Thien - Hue.
"A true countryside market-day on the 6th of the Lunar New Year (i.e. the 28th January) not only sold vegetables, fish, oranges, tangerines, bananas, pineapples, areca nuts, etc. but also showed games such as Spring offering festival (Le te Xuan), basket boat race, tug of war, choi singing, etc., which are only available on the Lunar New Year market-day in My Loi,” said Hoang Van Giai, secretary of the party committee of Phu Loc district.
My Loi market is close to the river wharf, convenient for trade and cargo shipments between Tam Giang lagoon and Cau Hai. The market is also the place to host Spring festivities and welcome the Lunar New Year for the My Loi people which has been handed down from the ancient times with many games like Spring offering festival, basket boat race, tug of war, choi singing...
Thanks to the fertile soil there, My Loi areca nuts are round, thick in pulp, thin in the outer layer, soft and sweet. My Loi oppositifolius yam is very famous, which used to be offered to kings in the ancient time. In the far long-gone days, the My Loi people went to the forest (shoots in sand forest), digging yarn to offer to lords and kings in order to be given exemption or reduction of taxes and fees.
The elders in My Loi village say that the village was established in 1562 by land developers who were fishermen emigrating from the North to the South by sea route and chose this most dangerous land to set up the village. Now, My Loi village is 896 ha in land area with 1,400 households and 6,000 inhabitants.
The village has got products of household name brands: as for horticulture, there are My Loi areca trees under the shade of which are oranges, tangerines, bananas, pineapples and arrow-roots; My Loi conical hats are not inferior to the Hue ones; Sea-going job in My Loi bring about various types of fish, such as discus, grouper, bass, mackerel, tuna, black tiger shrimp, tiger shrimp which are famous for their good taste.
The land of Hue is famous for its Nam Pho areca (Buying lime at Quan and Cau markets/Buying Nam Pho areca nut and buying betel leaf at Dinh market), however, Nam Pho areca nut, which is grown on heavy soil, is not as tasty as My Loi areca nut grown on sandy humus soil./.
