When was the 1982 U.N Convention on the Law of the Sea ratified and put into force? When did Vietnam ratify the 1982 Convention?

The 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea was ratified on 16 November 1994 and took effect from that date. Up to November 30, 2010, the Convention had been signed and ratified by 143 countries.

Vietnam is the 63th country that ratified the Convention through a Resolution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam’s National Assembly on 23 June 1994 and deposited ratification copy on 25 July 1994.

Before and after the ratification of the 1982 Convention, most the provisions of the Convention were applied by Vietnam as the basis for its activities on the sea. The ratification of the 1982 Convention is an inevitable step, affirming Vietnam's resolve, together with the international community, to build a new just legal order on the sea, while confirming the correctness of Vietnam’s marine policies and laws, which serve as the basis for the development of sustainable maritime economy in combination with firm protection of the national defense, security and interests of our country on the sea, as well as the basis for us to consider to our support and further participation in other international legal writings after the 1982 Convention.
