Red Rain to lead Vietnamese film box office revenue in 2025
"Red Rain," the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of 2025, far surpassed the rest, earning more than double that of the second-highest-grossing film, "The Four Venomous Men": 714 billion VND compared to 332 billion VND. Following that were "Battle in the Air," "Detective Kien," "Ancestral House," and others.
1. Red Rain: 714 billion VND
Recently, "Red Rain" has been continuously screened at film weeks and community screenings for citizens, veterans, and the elderly. A few months after leaving theaters, the film has become "popular," being shown for free on the TV360 app and also being screened at mobile theaters in many localities across the country.

Having reached a milestone of 714 billion VND and 8.3 million viewers, "Red Rain" could have easily achieved even higher box office revenue as the hype hadn't died down yet. However, the People's Army Film Studio decided to withdraw the film from theaters to bring it to a wider audience.
2. The Four Revenge Agents: 332 billion VND
Following the box office success of "Mai" in 2024, "The Four Assassins" can be considered a temporary setback for director Tran Thanh, although the film's box office performance remains very high. Undeniably, Tran Thanh is still a "box office star," the name that attracts the biggest audience in his films. Every Tet holiday, many viewers still eagerly await Tran Thanh's films.

Therefore, let's wait and see what Trấn Thành will "show off" with his new film, " Thỏ ơi!" (Oh, Little Rabbit!), this Tet holiday . The cast is rumored to include many "Em xinh say hi" (pretty girls say hi) and young faces, replacing the familiar cast from previous years.
3. Deadly aerial battle: 251 billion VND
Director Ham Tran's film "Battle in the Air" was selected to open the "Vietnamese Cinema - Journey of Light" week in Paris, France, on February 5th. Many Vietnamese viewers in France, after watching the film, expressed surprise that a Vietnamese film could be so captivating, dramatic, modern, and entertaining.

The 251 billion VND revenue doesn't fully reflect the potential of "Battle in the Air" and the action film genre in Vietnam. Hopefully, in the future, there will be more action films of comparable quality to attract audiences to theaters.
4. Detective Kien - The Headless Case: 248 billion VND
Similar to the action film genre of "Battle in the Air," "Detective Kien - The Headless Case" has inspired the development of a new film genre in Vietnam: psychological horror detective films, which could be adapted into series with a central character capable of captivating audiences.

Detective Kien is also a spin-off of The Last Wife, focusing on the beloved supporting character from The Last Wife. Following the success of the first part, director Victor Vu has just announced the second part, Detective Kien: The Golden Curse, scheduled for release in 2026.
5. Ancestral house: 242 billion VND
The success of "The Ancestral House" is due to the synergy of many factors: years of dedication by Huynh Lap to spiritual horror films and honing his skills with web dramas; Phuong My Chi's foray into film with a perfectly suited, cute, and Gen Z-esque role; and the message about family love and the emphasis on the significance of ancestral commemoration for young audiences, especially Gen Z.

With the film's success, audiences hope that the dynamic duo of Huynh Lap and Phuong My Chi will continue their long careers in film. Furthermore, stories centered around young people and focusing on universal family and social values are also commendable.
6. Flip Face 8 - The Sunshine Bracelet: 232 billion VND
Similar to the case of Tran Thanh with "The Four Vengeful Spirits," "Face Off 8 - The Embrace of the Sun" is a temporary setback for director Ly Hai, but the results are not bad at all. Perhaps the film will encourage Ly Hai to invest more time and effort into the scriptwriting process to better convince the audience.

Ly Hai's advantage is that he has his trusted producer (his wife Minh Ha), and a core team that has gradually become more experienced through many successful film projects. He is also always open to young actors and new faces.
7. The Billion-Dollar Kiss: 211 billion VND
Some viewers didn't appreciate "The Billion Dollar Kiss" because the story wasn't original and the romantic comedy was simplistic. However, it must be acknowledged that this is one of the few Vietnamese films with a female perspective, featuring all female main characters, from a directorial debut by a female director, Thu Trang.

The film "The Billion Dollar Kiss " brought Ma Ran Do's name to a wider public attention. After this film, he starred in the hit movies "Battle in the Air" and "Searching for the Ambergris ." Ma Ran Do is the only actor to have starred in three films in the top 10 highest-grossing Vietnamese films of the year.
Another actor, Quang Tuan, also has three films that grossed over 100 billion VND, but only two of them made it into the top 10 ( Searching for Ambergris and Underground ).
8. The Search for Ambergris: 192 billion VND (currently showing)
The search for ambergris is the most unexpected success of the year, likely to join the group of "200 billion VND films". Currently, there are 5 films in the top 10 with 200 billion VND, but by the end of the year, this number could reach 6. This success also demonstrates the Midas touch of the producing couple Vo Thanh Hoa and Mai Bao Ngoc in creating opportunities for new directors.

Despite featuring box office stars like Quang Tuan and Ma Ran Do, " Searching for Ambergris" was still an unexpected success. The film came from the production team Action C – a group specializing in web-based action-comedy films – with director Duong Minh Chien and main and supporting actors who were relatively unknown at the box office.
9. Underground Tunnels - The Sun in the Darkness: 172 billion VND
As one of the best Vietnamese films of the year, and a nominee for the Golden Lotus Award as well as other film awards, " The Tunnel - The Sun in the Darkness" is a must-see. It was well-received by audiences when it was released in theaters and started a craze for war and revolutionary films this year.

Director Bui Thac Chuyen's film sparked lively discussion upon its release, creating a wave of young people flocking to theaters to watch war films. The film boasts a tight script, cinematic language approaching international standards, and a modern and restrained storytelling style, setting it apart from other Vietnamese war films.
10. Abandoning one's mother: 171 billion VND
"Abandoning My Mother" is the most successful co-production between the two countries in the Vietnamese market this year, serving as a catalyst for many other collaborative film projects that have been and are being undertaken. The film's script was written by South Korean director Mo Hong Jin, based on his research into real life in Vietnam, and received advice from a Vietnamese team, especially producer Phan Gia Nhật Linh.

The film was shot in both Vietnam and South Korea, with Vietnam being the central setting. " Abandoning My Mother" leads a commendable trend where foreign filmmakers take the time to deeply understand Vietnam, listen to Vietnamese teams, and the film is well-received by Vietnamese audiences.
Vietnamese film revenue increases sharply.
This year, "The Ghost Lamp" (105 billion VND) and "The Corpse Possessed" (149 billion VND) – both very high revenues compared to previous years – didn't even make it into the top 10. This proves just how much Vietnamese film revenue has increased this year. " Abandoning My Mother, " the film that ranked last in the top 10, still reached 171 billion VND.
Last year, even films that didn't break even, like " Hai Muoi" and "Once Upon a Time There Was a Love Story ," could still make it into the top 10 highest-grossing Vietnamese films. But this year, all the films that made it into the top 10 were profitable, even very profitable. And this year, there are about 10 other films that had higher revenues than " Hai Muoi" or " Once Upon a Time There Was a Love Story " but didn't make it into the top 10.
