“123456” is the most commonly used password in Vietnam in 2025

Passwords are considered the "key" to protect online accounts, personal information, and user privacy from hackers and threats on the Internet environment.

Many people are concerned about the security of their online accounts, so they choose complex, hard-to-guess passwords that combine many different types of characters to prevent hackers from discovering and breaking into their accounts.

However, on the contrary, many people think that complex passwords are difficult to remember, so they choose simple, easy-to-remember passwords to protect their online accounts.

Although easy for users to remember, simple passwords are like a loose lock, because hackers can quickly detect and break into the account at any time.

According to NordPass, a company that provides security and password management services, the unit has compiled and filtered a list of the 200 most commonly used passwords in 2025 globally and in 50 countries where the software is operating.

The list was built from data from hundreds of millions of online accounts, with the help of independent security experts who analyze cybersecurity incidents.

List of 200 most common passwords globally in 2025

Topping the list of most used passwords in 2025 is “123456.” This is the third year in a row and the sixth year in the past seven that “123456” has been the most commonly used password (except in 2022 when “password” became the most commonly used password of the year).

NordPass estimates that by 2025, there will be more than 21.6 million online accounts globally using the login password “123456” and it would take hackers less than a second to figure out this password.

The remaining passwords in the top 5 most commonly used passwords in 2025 include “admin” (over 21 million accounts), “12345678” (over 8.2 million accounts), “123456789” (over 5.6 million accounts), and “12345” (over 3.9 million accounts).

NordPass also published a list of the most commonly used and easy-to-guess passwords in Vietnam in 2025.

Like the rest of the world, “123456” is also the most commonly used password in Vietnam, with more than 1.89 million online accounts using it. Coming in second on the list is “123456789” and third is “12345678”.

Tips for setting a secure password

Security experts have made many recommendations to help users set strong passwords, reducing the risk of hackers discovering and breaking into online accounts.

- Preferably use passwords of 12 characters or more, combining lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers and special characters. The longer and more diverse the password, the longer it will take for hackers' automatic detection tools to crack it, thereby significantly reducing the possibility of being exposed.

- Each online account should have a different password. This helps limit the risk of spreading, because if one account is compromised, hackers cannot deduce the passwords of the remaining accounts.

- Users should generate random passwords instead of using easy-to-remember strings that they set themselves. Password managers will store and autofill them when needed, helping you only have to remember one master password of the management application.

There are currently many password management software developed by reputable security companies that can help users build and protect effective password systems.
