Only 14 days left until the technical opening of the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway. More than 2,100 workers and 1,150 machines are "overcoming the sun and rain", working day and night to complete more than 110km of the main route.

On December 5, a leader of the My Thuan Project Management Board said that in just 14 days, the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway is expected to be technically open to traffic. This is the final piece connecting the North - South expressway axis from Lang Son to the southernmost tip of the country.

"Along the entire 110km main route, the construction atmosphere is "tense as a bowstring". Rain or shine, day or night, we are still working to ensure we reach the technical traffic opening date on December 19," said a leader of the board.

More than 2,100 workers and 1,150 machines and equipment are working around the clock. The persistent rains often wet the road surface, making the work of paving asphalt sections stressful. But as soon as the weather dries, the construction teams immediately start: spreading crushed stone, compacting the base, paving asphalt, and covering with asphalt concrete.

"When it rains, we move on to other auxiliary blocks. When it's sunny, we start laying asphalt immediately, without wasting time," emphasized the leader of My Thuan Project Management Board.

According to the report of My Thuan Project Management Board, as of December 2, the priority items have reached 90%. The last meters of road are being constructed with the foundation and surface, completing the traffic safety system: painted lines, signs, guardrails, and drainage surface. Although the progress is very urgent, all technical standards on the compactness of the foundation, the flatness of the road surface, and construction safety are still strictly controlled by the consulting and supervising teams and supervising engineers.

To save time on commuting, most contractors have arranged for workers to have lunch and dinner right at the construction site. Rows of temporary shelters set up along the roadside have been bustling with workers for months.

In the remaining time, My Thuan Project Management Board requires construction units to mobilize all resources and closely monitor the weather to take advantage of every sunny hour for construction.

The completion of the Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway not only upgrades the Western region's transport infrastructure to connect the Mekong Delta to the national expressway network, but also opens up new development opportunities, promotes economic and cultural exchange, and shortens the time and distance between the Western provinces and key economic zones.

The Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway project has a main route length of 110.85km (through Can Tho city, An Giang province and Ca Mau province) and a connecting route of 25.85km.

The project is divided into two component projects including the Can Tho - Hau Giang section and the Hau Giang - Ca Mau section, invested by My Thuan Project Management Board.

The total investment is 27,523 billion VND, started on January 1, 2023, and is planned to be completed by the end of 2025.
