Dr. Hoang Xuan (Taiwan, China) said that hair dryers are convenient and familiar, but like any other item, they must be used properly to be effective and safe. Some mistakes when using it can have a negative impact on hair, scalp and even hearing, but many people still do it every day without knowing it. Common examples include:
1. Drying your hair at too high a temperature
Even if you are in a hurry, you should not blow dry your hair at too high a temperature. Too much exposure to heat from a hair dryer can strip your hair of its natural oils. This can dry out the hair cuticles and cause breakage, frizz, dryness, and breakage.
Blow-drying your hair incorrectly not only damages your scalp or hair, but can also "destroy" your hearing (Illustration photo)
If the temperature is too high, it can damage the hair, hair roots and scalp, even causing burns. In the long run, it can also cause dandruff and itchy scalp. In addition, the heat from this process can have a negative impact on your ears both inside and out.
According to Dr. Hoang Xuan, you should choose a hair dryer with the function of "temperature adjustment" and "alternate hot and cold" to protect your hair and scalp. Never dry your hair at a temperature above 60 degrees Celsius. When you find that the machine or heat is too hot, stop drying your hair and wait. If you are not in a hurry, you should prioritize using the wind mode instead of the heat mode to better protect your hair and scalp.
2. Set the fan speed too high when drying your hair.
Dr. Hoang Xuan reminds that even if the temperature factor is not taken into account, the fan's level of wind (in both wind and heat modes) is harmful. The simplest is that it can easily cause hair to become tangled, break, and dry the scalp. In particular, this habit is also harmful to hearing.
Because if you turn on the fan too loud when drying your hair and accidentally let the wind blow into your ear, it can cause damage to the eardrum and ear canal. Hair dryers can also create noise of 85 decibels (dB), even louder when set to high wind. When held too close to the ear or dried hair for a long time, it can increase the risk of hearing loss. According to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), the consequences may not be seen immediately, but if you do these two things for a long time, your hearing can be "destroyed" silently.
3. Placing the dryer in the wrong position when drying your hair
Hair drying is a simple action but few people care about how to do it correctly. Especially about the position of the hair dryer. Common mistakes are placing it too close to the hair and scalp, placing it too close to the ear, blowing the air in the wrong direction...
Dr. Hoang Xuan's advice is to immediately stop the habit of placing the hair dryer close to the scalp, even when using the air-blowing mode. The most reasonable distance from the hair that needs to be dried to the dryer is 10 - 15cm for normal hair, 20cm if your hair is too weak or damaged by chemicals. With this distance, your hair will be able to dry quickly, while keeping your hair and scalp from being damaged.
Keep hair dryers away from your ears, especially those that produce loud noises or high temperatures. Never let the air from the hair dryer blow directly into your ears as this can damage your eardrum.
4. Moving too much while drying your hair
Many people feel uncomfortable sitting or standing in one place while drying their hair. However, Dr. Hoang Xuan advises not to move around too much while drying your hair.
This habit itself slows down the hair drying process, making you spend more time. When you move too much, not only does it make it difficult for your hair to dry, but it also makes it easy for your hair to tangle, break, or even get caught in the dryer, which is dangerous.
Moving while drying your hair can blow water from your hair deep into your ears. This can make it difficult to dry and cause dampness, ringing in your ears, increased risk of ear diseases (especially infections) and hearing loss.
Use a towel to gently absorb and wipe hair before drying (Illustration)
In addition, Dr. Hoang Xuan also gave some other suggestions when drying hair to ensure safety and high efficiency. For example, do not dry hair for too long, let the wind blow continuously at one point. Dry intermittently so that the hair - scalp - hair can rest for 10 - 30 seconds depending on the case. After washing your hair, do not dry your hair immediately, but use a towel to gently absorb it first, remove the hair and then dry.
When drying your hair, divide it into small sections and use specialized hair and scalp care products. Do not dry your hair completely, only dry it to 80-90% and then let your hair dry completely naturally before going to bed.
