To maintain a youthful appearance, in addition to diet and exercise, skincare is a fundamental step. However, many people don't realize that some daily habits can cause their skin to age faster than expected.
Dr. Raj Arora, a general practitioner with over 66,700 social media followers and frequent appearances on major television channels like ITV and Sky News, shared important tips to prevent this condition.
Dr. Raj emphasized: "The biggest cause of skin aging sometimes lies not in what you lack, but in what you need to stop doing."
Here are the four most harmful habits she has compiled:
Sleep on your side.
Despite being the most common sleeping position, sleeping on your side is actually an enemy of your skin. Constantly pressing your face against the pillow for extended periods creates "sleep wrinkles" due to pressure and friction. Over time, these lines can become permanent.
This condition leads to deeper wrinkles, skin folds, and facial asymmetry, especially as the skin loses elasticity with age. People who habitually sleep on only one side often find that side has more wrinkles and looks older than the other.
Experts recommend that the best sleeping position is on your back to avoid direct pressure on your face. If you can't break the habit of sleeping on your side, you should use silk or satin pillowcases to reduce friction, or use ergonomic anti-aging pillows to limit contact between your face and the pillow surface.

Not using sunscreen (SPF)
Skipping daily sunscreen is a leading cause of premature aging, accounting for 80-90% of noticeable skin changes such as wrinkles, rough skin, and brown spots.
Studies show that UV rays damage collagen and elastin, causing sagging and uneven skin tone. Daily use of SPF 30+ is crucial to preventing (though not completely reversing) this damage. Even if your skin already shows signs of sun damage, starting to use SPF now will help protect it from worse damage in the future.
Electronic cigarettes (Vaping)
Dr. Raj warns that e-cigarettes accelerate the aging process, causing wrinkles, sagging, and dullness to appear prematurely. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, depriving the skin of oxygen and nutrients, and reducing the production of collagen and elastin. As a result, the skin loses elasticity, looks paler, and appears significantly less vibrant compared to those who do not use them.
To dehydrate the body.
Dehydration causes dry, dull, sagging skin and makes it prone to developing a "sandpaper" texture, creating fine wrinkles.
It's important to distinguish between dehydrated skin and dry skin (lacking oil). Dehydrated skin is often caused by environmental factors, poor diet, and a decrease in natural collagen production. Adequate daily hydration helps replenish skin cells, improve elasticity, and reduce fine lines caused by dehydration.
