The historic victory of the Vietnam U17 team against the UAE on the morning of May 14th not only helped the team qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup for the first time, but also extended the special journey of Vietnamese football on the world stage.
To date, Vietnamese football has had five national teams participate in FIFA World Cups.
The Vietnamese futsal team paved the way by qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2016 in Colombia. In their first appearance, the Vietnamese futsal team made a big impact by reaching the round of 16.
A year later, the Vietnam U20 team continued to make history by securing a ticket to the FIFA U20 World Cup 2017 in South Korea under coach Hoang Anh Tuan. This marked the first time Vietnam's 11-a-side football team appeared in a men's World Cup.
In 2021, the Vietnamese futsal team continued to make its mark by participating in the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania for the second consecutive time. Coach Pham Minh Giang's team once again advanced through the group stage and into the knockout round.
In 2023, the Vietnamese women's national team wrote a new chapter in history by participating in the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time in Australia and New Zealand. Although they did not advance beyond the group stage, participating in the world's biggest tournament was considered a significant step forward for Vietnamese women's football.
And now, the Vietnam U17 team has become the next name to make history. Qualifying for the 2026 U17 World Cup not only reflects the progress of the current generation of young players, but also shows that Vietnamese football is gradually building a foundation in youth development.
After years of waiting, the World Cup dream for Vietnamese football is no longer a distant dream, but is being extended through each generation.
