Ms. Minh, 50 years old, had prolonged pain in her private area, difficulty in sexual intercourse, and the doctor concluded that she had a congenital malformation of the genital tract.
On May 15, MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam, Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that Ms. Minh (50 years old, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City) has 2 congenital genital abnormalities: clitoris 3 times larger than normal, enlarged vaginal lips. This is the cause of Ms. Minh's chronic vaginitis.
"When I was little, I bathed together and noticed that my private area was different from my sister's. When I got married, got pregnant, gave birth... it became an obsession. Because I felt self-conscious, I postponed going to the doctor," said Ms. Minh.
Dr. Thanh Tam reconstructed Ms. Minh's genitals, removing 6-8 cm of excess skin from each side of the vulva. This method ensures aesthetics, stops inflammation, and improves marital relations.
Genital reconstruction is difficult because this organ has many blood vessels and sensory nerves. If not well controlled, it will cause complications such as infection, blood loss, and scarring. The surgery took 30 minutes, and Ms. Minh was discharged the same day. After the surgery to reconstruct the vulva, she needs to abstain from intercourse for 4-6 weeks.

Dr. Thanh Tam said that vulvar hypertrophy can be detected when a baby is born. The earliest intervention to correct the disease is when the girl is 2-3 years old or at school age. However, correction of the abnormal external genital structure in children is only performed if there are complications of chronic urinary tract infection, causing blockage of the urinary tract, hydronephrosis or neurogenic bladder. Ms. Minh's case is special because she entered menopause, the vaginal muscles were severely aged, genital infections were prolonged, and sexual intercourse was difficult before she went to see a doctor.
In girls, there are common congenital malformations of the external genitalia such as: adhesions of the vulva, clitoral hypertrophy, vulva,... The common feature is that it causes difficulty in daily life and sexual relations later on.
Some of these birth defects can be detected later in life, so parents should have their children screened early.
