From the early days of hardship, to today, Vietnamese agriculture has become a solid pillar of the economy , a livelihood support for tens of millions of farmers and a pioneer in implementing green growth commitments, protecting resources, the environment and sustainable development. On that journey, there are milestones that create historical turning points.

The victory of the Spring of 1975 reunited the country. But after the joy of unification came years of great hardship. Agricultural production gradually declined, bureaucratic and subsidized management led to low productivity, and the State had to import food to relieve hunger for the people. In 1988, Resolution 10 of the household contract policy was issued, officially handing over land and product use rights to farming households.

Dr. Dang Kim Son, former Director of the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Development, said: "In 1988, Vietnam imported millions of tons of rice. However, in 1989, Vietnam exported hundreds of thousands of tons of rice for the first time and then continuously for 10 years, each year the export was higher than the previous year. The whole world was amazed!"

Today, Vietnamese agriculture has entered a new era: high technology, digital traceability, green and circular economy.

"Vietnam is leading in the application of science, innovation and technology in agricultural production. This helps increase the efficiency, value and competitiveness of products," said Ms. Beth Dechdol, Deputy Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Resolution 19-NQ/TW in 2022 continues to affirm: Farmers are the subject and center of the agricultural development process. Agriculture is the national advantage and the pillar of the economy. Thanks to the right policies, in the period of 2021-2024, agricultural GDP grew by an average of 3.57% per year. Agricultural export turnover increased by an average of 10.3%.

Mr. Tran Duc Thang, Minister of Agriculture and Environment, emphasized: "The journey of the past 80 years is very proud, and at the same time has created a solid foundation for the Agriculture and Environment sector to enter a new stage of development. Although it will continue to face many difficulties and challenges, with high determination, the entire Agriculture and Environment sector will constantly innovate and create, continue its pioneering mission, and contribute to the sustainable development of the country."

For eight decades, the Agriculture and Environment sector has always been the pillar of the nation; ensuring economic development, social stability, food security; protecting resources and the living environment; making an important contribution to enhancing Vietnam's position in the international arena.
