ADB Vietnam has new Indian director

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on July 24 appointed Mr. Shantanu Chakraborty as the new Country Director for Vietnam to replace Mr. Andrew Jeffries, whose term ends on April 27, 2023.

Mr. Chakraborty, an Indian national, has nearly 28 years of professional experience in South Asia, Central and West Asia, and the United States, including 18 years at ADB. He served as Head of Infrastructure Finance Division 1 and before that as Director of Private Sector Transaction Support Unit in the Private Sector Operations Department (PSOD).

He also served as Senior Advisor to the Vice President (Private Sector and Co-Financing) and Principal Investment Specialist at PSOD.

Prior to joining ADB, Mr. Chakraborty had nearly 10 years of experience in project finance and investment banking in India (with ICICI Bank) and the United States (with UBS Warburg and Landesbank Hessen Thuringen).

Mr. Chakraborty will lead ADB's operations in Vietnam, represent the bank in policy dialogue, and further strengthen the bank's relationship with the government and other stakeholders.

He will oversee the implementation of the country partnership strategy for Vietnam for 2023-2026, focusing on Vietnam's transition to a green economy , harnessing the potential of the private sector and promoting social equity.

“I am honored to be appointed as Country Director for Vietnam. For 30 years, ADB has been a trusted partner of the government and people of Vietnam. I am delighted to lead ADB’s continued efforts to further strengthen the bank’s partnership with Vietnam,” said Mr. Chakraborty.

According to Mr. Chakraborty, ADB is continuing its lending and non-lending support to promote green, inclusive growth and a private sector-led economy in Viet Nam, while building the foundation for the country to achieve its goal of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2023 .
