AI helps us a great deal, but we must always be vigilant.

(NLĐO) - The over-reliance on AI in the medical field will inadvertently lead to incorrect, or even dangerous, treatment methods, protocols, and medications.

At the workshop "Digital Transformation in Training and Research in the Field of Traditional Medicine" held on November 14th in Hanoi, organized by the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, Mr. Nguyen Ngo Quang, Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Training, Ministry of Health, affirmed that digital transformation is an inevitable trend and cannot be ignored.

Dr. Nguyen Ngo Quang - Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Training, Ministry of Health

Currently, the Ministry of Health, with the Department of Science , Technology and Training as the coordinating agency, is in the process of finalizing the draft Artificial Intelligence Law, particularly regarding the application of AI in the healthcare sector. Mr. Nguyen Ngo Quang emphasized that ethics in AI applications are especially important because they relate to human health.

Mr. Nguyen Le Phuc, Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Training, Ministry of Health, also affirmed the positive aspects of applying AI in medical examination and treatment, such as supporting image diagnosis, analyzing medical record data, and predicting disease risks. However, Mr. Phuc also expressed concern about the crucial ethical issues in AI application. Therefore, the Ministry of Health is regularly working with the drafting committee of the Artificial Intelligence Law project related to the health sector.

Mr. Hoang Viet Anh, Deputy Director of the Center for Quality Management of Medical Examination and Treatment at Bach Mai Hospital, shared the model of an "AI hospital, virtual hospital, smart hospital." Mr. Hoang Viet Anh stated that AI helps manage and analyze massive amounts of data. Bach Mai Hospital currently has approximately 12,000 to 14,000 patient records per day; AI will help create a living data repository that is interconnected and allows for personalized treatment.

However, Mr. Hoang Viet Anh also pointed out the challenge of data security. The biggest concern is whether AI could leak or disseminate data, because medical data and data related to patients are extremely valuable resources.

"When data is fed into data warehouses or AI models for processing and to receive useful products, the question arises: Will the data be leaked or disseminated afterwards? This is a problem that needs a solution from the very beginning, right at the start of the implementation process. We cannot wait until an incident occurs to address it, because at that point it will be extremely difficult," said Mr. Hoang Viet Anh.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, Director of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, delivered a speech at the conference.

Besides, while AI is very helpful, we must always be vigilant because AI can have some drawbacks, even "fabricating stories" and creating fictitious data and references…

Mr. Hoang Viet Anh argues that relying too heavily on AI could inadvertently lead to incorrect, even dangerous, treatment methods, protocols, and medications. Therefore, AI should always be considered a support tool or device, not equal to humans, and especially, we should not become dependent on it. AI cannot replace humans; it can only assist us in accomplishing more.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, Director of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, said: The Academy is developing a strategy to become a "digital university" in the field of traditional medicine, aiming to become a key university model to be submitted to the Ministry of Health and the Government in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The academy is promoting e-learning materials and online question banks; applying big data and AI in scientific research; and helping faculty and students adapt flexibly between tradition and technology.

According to Mr. Huy, for the healthcare sector, this is not only a major policy but also an inevitable trend of the times, urging innovation in training methods, improving the quality of research and applying technology to better serve the health of the people.

"Digital transformation is not simply about equipping with new technology, but a comprehensive process of innovation encompassing management, teaching, research, mindset, and learning culture," Mr. Huy affirmed.
