VnExpressVnExpress27/10/2023

People with cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, liver or kidney failure, anemia or autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus... should not have cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Tong Hai, Head of the Department of Microsurgery and Reconstruction, Center for Plastic Surgery and Reconstruction, National Burn Hospital, said the demand for cosmetic surgery is increasing, but not everyone is healthy enough to do it.

In particular, people with severe cardiovascular and respiratory diseases such as heart failure, high blood pressure (using many medications), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma should be cautious. Cosmetic surgery will put a burden on the heart and lungs, leading to complications.

In addition, people with metabolic diseases such as gout, diabetes that are difficult to control, because surgery can make the wound difficult to heal. People with impaired liver function, cirrhosis, ascites, kidney failure, dialysis; people with anemia, disorders of blood clotting factors or people who have to take anticoagulants for a long time; people with systemic diseases during outbreaks, immunodeficiency diseases; women who are breastfeeding should also not have cosmetic surgery because of the high risk of complications.

In particular, Dr. Hai warned that people with systemic lupus erythematosus need to pay attention. This is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect many parts of the body. There is currently no complete treatment for this disease as well as other autoimmune diseases, but early and active treatment still helps patients control it well.

If during the period of stable lupus erythematosus, the patient can have cosmetic surgery such as eyelid surgery, eyebrow lift, nose lift (biological filler material), liposuction in some areas.

"However, major cosmetic surgeries with implant placement, multiple surgeries at once, and long surgery times should not be performed. In cases of acute flare-ups, this is contraindicated," the doctor said.

In the case that a patient has just had cosmetic surgery and then notices signs of lupus erythematosus, it is necessary to stay calm. The patient needs to be monitored to assess the severity of the disease, use painkillers (if any), use drugs to protect the liver and kidneys. At the same time, combine corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory drugs, and low-dose immunosuppressants as prescribed.

In particular, before performing surgery, even minor surgery, the doctor must ask about the patient's medical history to ensure safety and control if any problems occur.
