Early morning of December 1, Ajax hosted Groningen at home in the 14th round of the Dutch Championship - Eredivisie. After 5 minutes, while the away team players were controlling the ball and launching an attack, suddenly there was a firework sound from behind the Ajax goal.
A series of flares and fireworks exploded behind the Ajax goal, causing chaos. The match was immediately suspended by the referee and players from both teams were instructed to move to a safe place.
The match was delayed for more than 40 minutes before the players were allowed to come out and continue the match. However, just seconds after the players returned to the field, fireworks were thrown onto the field again. And it caused the match to be abandoned to ensure the safety of the players.
According to the Algemeen Dagblad (Dutch newspaper), the reason was that the F-Side team burned it to commemorate the late fan Thijmen Ruben Pfann (Tum), who recently passed away at the age of 29. This incident marked a new black spot in Ajax's unstable season.
The same thing happened in the match between Ajax and SC Heerenveen in early November, causing a 15-minute delay. Fireworks were set off in memory of another Ajax fan , “Patrick Paddy Overeem”.

Following the incident, the Ajax Supporters Association issued a statement. "The Ajax Supporters Association regrets that a group of fans caused this match to be abandoned.
We are determined not to take any action that would harm the club, especially actions that endanger other players and fans .”
On the club's side, Ajax also issued a clear statement: "Ajax finds what happened at the stadium tonight a scandal. We apologize to all those affected. The safety of spectators and players was threatened. This is unacceptable."
