Alcaraz makes a spectacular comeback, moving closer to the ATP Finals semi-finals

In front of a large audience at Inalpi Arena (Turin, Italy), the Spanish number one seed made an impressive comeback, winning 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-3 to maintain an unbeaten record of 2-0 in the Jimmy Connors group.

Last year's runner-up Fritz seemed certain to secure a second consecutive win over Alcaraz in 2025, but the 22-year-old showed his mettle and ability to break through strongly, especially with a 14-minute service game in the second set, which was considered the turning point of the match.

“The match was very tense. I had more trouble than him in the first set. I didn’t serve well and he was quite comfortable at the back of the court. I’m really relieved to win this. Even though I didn’t feel the ball as well as in the opening match, I still found a way to come back and exploit his weaknesses,” Alcaraz said after the match.

With this victory, Alcaraz still cannot qualify for the semi-finals as Alex de Minaur lost to debutant Lorenzo Musetti in the later match of the day. The Spaniard is now only 50 points behind Jannik Sinner in the race for the number one ranking of the year. He will close the group stage with a match against Musetti next Thursday.

“I will try not to think too much about it. The next match will be very important. I will try not to let the pressure affect me, focus on the goal and try to feel better than today,” Alcaraz said with a smile when asked about the possibility of keeping the number one position.

The highlight of the match came early in the second set, when Alcaraz faced a break point in game 3. He saved the situation with a spectacular defense, then rushed to the net to hit a decisive volley, sending the crowd into a frenzy. From there, he gradually took the lead and completely changed the course of the match.

According to statistics, Alcaraz successfully saved both break-points in the second set, before taking advantage of the opportunity in the 12th game to close out the set, thanks to a bit of luck when Fritz's backhand return went wide of the net. Entering the deciding set, the world number one completely dominated, leading 5-1 before ending the match after 2 hours and 48 minutes, raising the score against Fritz to 5-1.
