At the Global Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Alibaba unveiled a character-based image generator called Tongyi Wanxiang. Enterprise customers will get the first beta access. On the same day, Huawei demonstrated the third version of its Panggu AI model at its annual developer conference in Dongguan.
Chinese companies are ramping up AI development after OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot sparked a generative AI war. Research firm McKinsey predicts generative AI will add $7.3 trillion to the global economy each year.
Alibaba’s image generator will compete with OpenAI’s Dall-E and Midjourney, both American rivals that already have large global user bases.
Alibaba Cloud emerged from a restructuring in March that split Alibaba into six divisions. In April, Alibaba Cloud launched a ChatGPT-like chatbot, Tongyi Qianwen. Along with Tongyi Wangxiang, the company also introduced ModelScopeGPT, an AI tool for developers.
Meanwhile, Huawei said its AI takes a different approach than current AI applications. Instead of focusing on content production, Pangu 3.0 is primarily for industrial use. Its purpose is to ensure more efficient safety inspections for freight trains, AI support for local government services, and more accurate weather forecasts.
