Amorim will replace Guardiola at Man City. |
According to numerous sources in Portugal, Benfica has chosen Amorim as their top candidate to replace Jose Mourinho. The "Special One" has reportedly reached an agreement to return to manage Real Madrid after this season.
In that context, chairman Rui Costa quickly turned his attention to Amorim. This manager had built a great reputation in Portugal before his failure at Old Trafford.
The 41-year-old strategist led Benfica's rival Sporting Lisbon to two national championships between 2021 and 2024, and is considered one of the most promising young coaches in Europe.
Notably, Amorim was a Benfica player who retired while Rui Costa was the club's Sporting Director. The close relationship between the two is believed to be a key factor in facilitating the transfer.
Amorim's career unexpectedly took a downturn after a turbulent period at MU. He only won 25 out of 63 games in charge of the "Red Devils," and also caused great controversy by publicly criticizing high-ranking figures in the club.
Despite being highly regarded by Man City, Amorim was not on the list of potential replacements for Pep Guardiola at Etihad. Instead, he wanted to return to his homeland to restart his career.
Unless there's a last-minute twist, Amorim will make a comeback at Benfica hoping to revive his reputation after the painful fall at Old Trafford.
