The Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee also affirmed that the province has an important geostrategic position with a sea area of over 63,000 km², a 200 km long coastline and a border with Cambodia of nearly 148 km, favorable for developing international trade. Phu Quoc Special Zone together with the dynamic urban areas of Long Xuyen, Chau Doc, Rach Gia, Ha Tien and two airports connecting the country and the world are creating new growth momentum.

According to Mr. Hai, after the merger, the economic growth rate in the first 6 months of the year reached over 8.1%, belonging to the group of 17 provinces with growth of over 8% nationwide. The economic structure has shifted positively, the proportion of trade and services has increased; transport and urban infrastructure has been heavily invested; social security has been ensured; national defense and security have been maintained. However, the Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee frankly pointed out that the province had 9 targets that had not been achieved in the first 6 months of this year.

The draft political report submitted to the Provincial Party Congress identifies the goal that by 2030, An Giang will become a fairly developed province in the country, a strong marine economic center, Phu Quoc special zone reaching international standards; the quadrilateral region of Long Xuyen - Chau Doc - Rach Gia - Ha Tien will become a driving force for industrial development, logistics, cultural - ecological tourism, high-tech agriculture - aquaculture - medicinal herbs, border trade economy...

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien - member of the Prime Minister's Policy Advisory Council, former Director of the Vietnam Economic Institute - said that Vietnam in general, An Giang in particular, is facing a "once in a thousand years" historical opportunity. However, it is also full of challenges, requiring the province to renew its thinking and drastically reform to develop quickly and sustainably.

Mr. Thien commented that An Giang is a “peaceful coordinate” in the context of many world uncertainties, a reliable destination for investors. However, to develop properly, An Giang must build new development capacity, be flexible in policies, improve adaptability, and set a double-digit growth target as a vital requirement, especially for a province with a high rate of pure agriculture.

“The province needs to build the aspiration to become a strategic growth pole of the region, integrating into the international community at a high level. This is based on three modern pillars including innovation, effective institutions, and dynamic private enterprises, in a stable, open, flexible, and highly competitive development environment,” said Mr. Thien.
