An Giang develops sustainable marine farming

Not only is An Giang a key agricultural region, it is also a province with great potential for marine economic development. In particular, marine aquaculture plays an important role in the sustainable development strategy, contributing to making the province a national marine economic center in the future.

Exploiting advantages and expanding marine farming space

With a coastline of over 200km, a large fishing ground of about 63,290km2, more than 140 large and small islands and abundant aquatic resources, An Giang has favorable conditions for developing the marine economy , especially marine aquaculture. In recent times, marine aquaculture activities in the province have developed rapidly in both scale and output, with a variety of farming objects suitable to the natural conditions of each region. The sea areas of Kien Hai, Phu Quoc special zones and the island communes of Tien Hai, Hon Nghe, Son Hai have favorable conditions for raising cobia, grouper, yellowfin pomfret, sea bass... according to the traditional wooden or HDPE plastic cage model. According to statistics from the agricultural sector, by the end of 2024, the whole province will have 4,291 marine fish farming cages, with a harvest output of 4,241 tons/year.

In the coastal communes of An Bien, An Minh, Hon Dat, Kien Luong and Ha Tien, the farming of mollusks, such as blood cockles, green mussels, sea mussels, clams... has developed strongly, with a farming area of 23,345 hectares, and a harvest output of more than 96,600 tons/year. In addition, the province also develops the farming of other species, such as pearls, oysters, snails...

According to many farmers, marine farming is becoming an effective economic model, helping people improve their income and become well-off. Ms. Huynh Tuyet Hanh, a fish cage farmer in Phu Quoc special zone, shared: “Compared to fishing, the model of raising cobia and pearl grouper in cages brings significantly higher economic efficiency. With 15 cages, after deducting costs, farmers can earn a profit of 500 - 600 million VND/year.”

However, marine farming activities in the province still face many difficulties. The infrastructure for marine farming is currently both weak and lacking. The implementation of infrastructure construction programs and projects is slow, not meeting development requirements. The scale of production is still small, mainly by households; the ability to apply high technology is limited. In addition, the water environment around the farming area is still polluted.

Ms. Tran Thi Hoi, Director of Thanh Hoa Farmers' Cooperative (Kien Hai Special Zone), said that the biggest difficulty is the lack of capital to invest in technological innovation. Most of the farmers' fish rafts are made of wood and are easily damaged. "I want to switch to HDPE plastic cages, but the cost is quite high. I hope the State will have a policy to support low-interest loans or installment payments so that people can invest in modern, wave-resistant, durable cages that can be raised offshore, helping fish grow quickly, have fewer diseases and achieve higher economic efficiency," Ms. Hoi said.

Attracting investment and innovating farming technology

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Le Huu Toan said that in order to exploit the potential of marine aquaculture, in recent years, the province has regularly reviewed, supplemented planning and issued many mechanisms and policies to attract investment in the marine aquaculture industry. In the period of 2024 - 2025, the Provincial People's Committee has approved investment policies for 5 enterprises, with a total area of 2,908.7 hectares and a total capital of VND 1,110 billion. In addition to the approved project list, the province continues to call on capable enterprises to invest in weak areas such as seed production, industrial feed, processing and exporting marine aquaculture products.

Along with that, the Department of Agriculture and Environment advised the Provincial People's Committee to develop specific policies and mechanisms, encouraging people to apply modern technology and digital technology in marine aquaculture; integrating marine aquaculture space into the provincial planning. The province has done a good job of licensing marine aquaculture, allocating marine areas and issuing identification codes for marine aquaculture facilities according to the law.

In order to help farmers access new technical advances in the field of marine aquaculture, in 2025, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center will deploy 20 marine fish farming sites using HDPE cages, with a total scale of 3,712m2 . At the same time, coordinate with localities to organize training courses to guide farmers on techniques for raising, caring for, preventing and treating fish diseases, responding to epidemics and propagating the marine aquaculture development project according to the Fisheries Law. In addition, the center encourages people to raise fish in cages to switch to chain linkage, use industrial feed instead of trash fish, reduce plastic waste, and contribute to environmental protection.
