Overeating: Doctors warn about this!

Cardiologists warn that fatty meals can overwork the heart, making it especially dangerous for people with risk factors.

Overeating, especially during holidays, combined with existing medical conditions, can increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events, according to Times of India .

Blood rushes to the digestive system, the heart works harder

Dr Tamiruddin Danwade, interventional cardiologist at Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai (India), said that combining high-energy foods and eating too much will create a "storm" for the heart.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology , a high-fat meal “significantly impairs endothelium-dependent vasodilation for several hours.” This means the arteries temporarily become stiffer, making the heart work harder.

Dr. Rahul Gupta, Department of Cardiology at Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai (India) shared: "Just one high-fat meal can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure in people with coronary artery disease."

After a big meal, the body diverts more blood to the digestive system, reducing blood flow to the heart, which has to beat faster to compensate. Dr. Gupta also emphasized that this sudden change, combined with high triglyceride levels, can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, especially in people who already have high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

A previous study by the American Heart Association (AHA) also found that increased triglycerides after meals are directly linked to the risk of cardiovascular events. This is why meals high in fat and sugar can put temporary stress on the body, leading to inflammation and vascular stress.

How to protect your heart

To protect the heart during hearty meals, especially at the end of the year, experts advise people to:

  • Eat smaller portions, starting with salad or soup.
  • Avoid fried and overly salty foods.
  • Walk 20-30 minutes after meals to improve circulation.
  • Drink enough water to balance salt levels.
  • Do not skip any medications, especially blood pressure or cholesterol medications.

“Overeating can cause heart problems, but it is completely preventable by eating mindfully,” Dr. Danwade emphasized.
