Dream is a playground for young athletes

After the country was unified, gradually the players who performed well in the national table tennis championship were selected to compete in the excellent table tennis tournament (CVXS). Initially, the national CVXS tournament only selected 8 players (both male and female). After a while, 2 more young players who performed well were selected to make up 10 players competing each year.

The characteristic of the CVXS table tennis tournament in our country is that it is played in a round-robin format, even when foreign athletes are invited to participate, such as the period when it was sponsored by the World Security Newspaper. The number of athletes participating in the tournament is increasing, and in the last 3 seasons, some excellent young and junior players have been added to the tournament, divided into groups and only compete in a round-robin format in the group stage. Then, the semi-finals and finals of the singles events are played.

This year's CVXS tournament was held at Cao Bang Provincial Gymnasium from December 6th to December 10th, with 22 male athletes (divided into 2 groups) and 21 female athletes (divided into 2 groups) participating. With this competition format, except for athletes who dropped out halfway, each athlete can compete in at least 9 matches (for groups of 10 athletes). This is something that many parents - especially those who have to travel too far - most of them dream of doing because everyone wants their children to compete with many opponents of different levels and playing styles to gain more competition experience.

Need serious "long-term" training

The dream is like that but it is not easy to achieve. For example, in this year's CVXS tournament, there are some athletes who have had joy after their "competitions". The first is athlete Do Le Van Chi of the Lam Dong team. Although only 13 years old, Van Chi has had an impressive achievement as the youngest person to enter the top 8 of the national championship for the Nhan Dan Newspaper Cup in 2023. Van Chi also won a silver medal in the U.13 women's singles at the international tournament in the Philippines in October 2023.

In the women's group B of the recently concluded national CVXS tournament (including 11 athletes including national players such as Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh, Nguyen Thi Nga, Tran Mai Ngoc, Nguyen Bach Thanh Thu, Van Le ranked 6th), to achieve this result, despite being the youngest athlete of the tournament, Van Chi excellently defeated the reigning women's singles champion of the national strong team, Vu Hoai Thanh (Army team) with a score of 3-0 (11/9, 12/10 and 11/8), and continued to beat two players Phuong Mai and Phuong Linh of the T&T team with the same score of 3-0.

Next, at the age of 14, athlete Nguyen Nhu Quynh (HCMC) was the 2023 national women's singles champion in the 14-15 age group. Notably, in the match against Van Chi in Group B of this year's CVXS tournament, Nhu Quynh defeated the most successful person of Lam Dong province with a score of 3-0.

Because Cao Bang province is the host of this year's CVXS tournament, this unit was given priority to select 2 athletes from the province to participate in the tournament, including athlete Nguyen Minh Hoang. Despite lacking many facilities, Minh Hoang has tried hard to practice to have tricky serves and smart cuts. Thanks to that, this 14-year-old athlete immediately defeated the reigning U.17 men's singles champion of the Southeast Asian Championship, Nguyen Hoang Lam, 3-2.

To achieve some of the above initial achievements, these 3 very young athletes have always made persistent efforts in long-term training, both professionally and physically, and have a healthy lifestyle to be able to maintain good results in the long term.
