Ancelotti was convicted of tax evasion. |
Under Spanish law, sentences of less than two years for non-violent crimes and for people with no previous convictions are usually suspended. Ancelotti is likely to pay a fine and will certainly not go to jail.
Ancelotti's spokesman said he would not comment on the case at this time. The Brazilian Football Confederation also issued a statement saying it was closely monitoring the case.
The Italian strategist was accused of deliberately providing false information to Spanish tax authorities during his early period leading Real Madrid from 2014 to 2015, in order to avoid paying income tax of more than 1 million euros.
Ancelotti admitted to making errors in his 2014 tax declaration. However, the former AC Milan coach said the fault lay with his accounting team. He insisted that in 2015 he did not violate tax laws because he did not stay in Spain for the full 183 days required to be taxed.
Prosecutors had previously asked for a much heavier sentence of four years and nine months in prison and a fine of 3.2 million euros. They argued that Ancelotti had only declared his salary paid by Real Madrid, but had failed to declare his huge income from image rights in 2014 and 2015.
In Spain, many famous figures have been caught up in tax evasion. Lionel Messi and his father received a 21-month suspended sentence in 2016 for defrauding 4.1 million euros in taxes. Cristiano Ronaldo paid a fine of nearly 19 million euros in 2019 and received a 23-month suspended sentence. Jose Mourinho and Diego Costa have both been caught up in tax evasion during their time in La Liga.
Ancelotti left Real Madrid in May to start a new journey with the Brazilian national team.
