The Department of Construction has just proposed to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to approve the policy of expanding Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and building a new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge to help reduce traffic congestion and synchronize the Nha Rong-Khanh Hoi Port area after converting its functions.
According to the proposal, Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, about 2.5km long, from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge, will be expanded from the existing 4 lanes to 6-8 lanes. The project will simultaneously build an underpass at Hoang Dieu intersection (at least 4 lanes) and build a new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge to replace the existing bridge. The total investment capital is estimated at about 2,950 billion VND. The Department of Construction also requested the Department of Finance to advise on capital allocation for the investment preparation phase; at the same time, assign the Department of Planning and Architecture to organize a competition for architectural ideas for the west bank of the Saigon River (from Ba Son Bridge to the international container port) including a multi-functional public park and 3 inland passenger ports, Bach Dang wharf park area, international passenger port, etc. According to the proposal, Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, about 2.5km long, from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge, will be expanded from the existing 4 lanes to 6-8 lanes.
Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is more than 2.5km long, connecting Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge, Xom Chieu Ward, is the main route connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with the southern area, including Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone and Phu My Hung urban area. However, the road surface is currently only about 14m wide, with 4 lanes. Many narrow sections and the heavy traffic of trucks, cars and motorbikes often cause the road to be overloaded, especially during rush hours. The existing two-way road has only four lanes and is often crowded, causing cars, buses and motorbikes to jostle each other, especially during rush hour.
Less than 500m from Khanh Hoi Bridge, the Hoang Dieu-Nguyen Tat Thanh intersection is one of the "hot spots" for traffic congestion in the old District 4. This is the intersection of many traffic directions from the city center through Khanh Hoi Bridge, from the southern area to the inner city and from Khanh Hoi Port to the old District 7. According to the general planning of Ho Chi Minh City for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the Saigon River road section coinciding with Nguyen Tat Thanh Street will be a new traffic axis, sharing traffic pressure with the existing North-South routes. When completed, the route will not only help reduce traffic pressure in the central area but also form a modern riverside landscape axis, directly connecting Nha Rong Wharf - Tan Thuan Bridge - Thu Thiem 4 Bridge.
