The British Ministry of Defense announced that more than 17,000 new Ukrainian soldiers have been trained by London and its allies over the past year to counter Russian forces.
The British Ministry of Defense said on June 26 that the Ukrainian recruits, coming from many walks of life, had undergone a rigorous five-week training program to turn them "from civilians to soldiers."
The UK-led training programme for Ukrainian recruits, which began in June 2022, involves nine countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania and the Netherlands. The programme teaches Ukrainian recruits, who have little or no military experience, various skills such as using weapons and first aid on the battlefield.
"The UK and our partners will continue to provide this vital support to Ukraine for as long as they need it," said UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.

He said the training had made a significant difference in Ukraine's combat effectiveness.
Britain initially offered to train 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers in battlefield skills. The Ministry of Defence said the training programme had been extended and aimed to train around 30,000 new Ukrainian soldiers by 2024.
Britain is one of the largest providers of military aid to Ukraine, providing $2.9 billion in aid last year and has pledged a similar amount this year.
