Betting the future on technological advancements.
Currently, the company is betting its future on the fastest-developing technology in the history of the computer industry.
In the current climate, Apple is still soaring thanks to the success of the iPhone. This product helped the company become one of the few publicly traded companies to reach a market valuation of $4 trillion last year.
CEO Tim Cook has expanded the iPhone beyond a simple product, transforming it into a platform for new business areas such as wearables, digital services, and healthcare.
The incoming CEO, John Ternus, will have to figure out the next path for Apple in a world where artificial intelligence is reshaping technology and how people use it every day.
The standards set for Apple are particularly high, considering its history of creating industry-shaping products, including smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets.
Apple has rolled out a range of AI-integrated features for iPhone, Mac, and iPad, allowing users to perform tasks such as removing unwanted objects from photos, summarizing messages, creating images, and translating languages.
Overall AI strategy
However, Apple has yet to present a clear overall AI strategy, such as how artificial intelligence will shape new products and help the company monetize its products.
Ternus 's background is primarily in hardware. He joined the product design team in 2001 and later became Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2021.
However, while users interact with AI through software, Apple tightly integrates hardware with applications, services, and the operating system.
Apple's chips are designed specifically for products like iPhones and Macs, helping to save energy and support features unique to Apple devices.
Meanwhile, many other device manufacturers use chips from suppliers like Qualcomm or Intel, giving them less control over features such as cameras or power management.
This means Ternus 's extensive knowledge of Apple hardware could greatly benefit the company's AI ambitions, especially as Apple develops new types of AI devices such as Siri-integrated smart glasses, wearable devices, and AirPods with cameras, according to Bloomberg.
According to Dan Ives, head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, hardware innovation will be “the heart and lungs of Apple’s success” in the coming years, and could shape CEO Ternus’s legacy as the company’s leader.
“The fact that Ternus is becoming the next CEO shows that much of the road ahead will revolve around hardware innovation,” said Gil Luria, managing director at DA Davidson.
In this way, Apple is now focusing heavily on hardware – a key element of the AI experience.
"The AI models will operate through a high-end hardware ecosystem, leading their respective markets," Luria said.
And it's not just Apple; the entire tech industry is racing to find the next breakthrough product, hoping that AI will change how people interact with technology.
