Arsenal's reaction to Premier League referees has not stopped after the team posted a statement yesterday (November 6). According to Daily Mail, following the message criticizing the tournament's management, the Emirates team is expected to request a meeting with the organizers and representatives of the English refereeing agency (PGMOL).
During this meeting, Arsenal will present all the cases where they have been disadvantaged by wrong or unreasonable refereeing decisions since last season. The English refereeing body has had to apologize to Arsenal and several other teams for the problems in operating VAR.
Referee Stuart Attwell
In February 2023, in Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Brentford, PGMOL admitted that the VAR referee made a mistake in not detecting an offside error in the Gunners' goal. Previously, in September 2022, when Arsenal lost 1-3 to Man Utd, Gabriel Martinelli's goal was also disallowed due to a refereeing error.
Another situation that could be raised by the Emirates Stadium team to question PGMOL is Mateo Kovacic's escape from a red card in the match between Arsenal and Man City last month. The Croatian midfielder only received a yellow card after two consecutive dangerous fouls on Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.
The turning point of the match between Newcastle and Arsenal came in the 64th minute when Anthony Gordon scored the opening goal for Newcastle from close range. VAR analyzed the situation from different angles, on and off the field, whether a Newcastle player committed a foul or was offside.
Arsenal lost to Newcastle in round 11 of the Premier League.
The controversial detail is that the assistants who watched the video did not confirm whether the referee was right or wrong, but only provided information that could not be clearly determined. Referee Stuart Attwell did not review the video himself and upheld his decision to award the goal.
After the match, coach Mikel Arteta expressed his anger, calling the goal a "disgrace" to refereeing in the Premier League. Arsenal's board of directors publicly supported the Spanish coach with a statement affirming that the league deserved better service, asking PGMOL to "urgently address refereeing standards".
According to the Daily Mail, the English refereeing body considers these reactions unnecessary. The organization - run by former referee Howard Webb - also takes action to increase the accuracy of refereeing decisions in the Premier League.
