The service of renting a lover or companion is booming globally - from Vietnam, South Korea to Latvia.
Even though the cost can be up to tens of millions of dong, many people accept this temporary solution to "trick" their families and solve the psychological pressure of loneliness.
This trend reflects the growth of the “loneliness economy ” – where the need for connection and social stress relief is increasing.
In Vietnam, the service of renting a lover has appeared for a long time and still has a strong attraction, especially when the Lunar New Year holiday is approaching. Many young people, due to pressure from family and relatives, accept to seek this service to have a temporary lover, avoiding the fatigue of facing questions about marriage. Brokerage companies offer attractive offers with pictures of handsome men and beautiful women and affirm that the staff have closed social relationships to ensure the lowest risk for customers.
South Korea and Latvia: Different Needs
In Vietnam, the service focuses on solving marital pressure. In South Korea, however, the "rent-a-companion" service has flourished largely due to the need to combat loneliness . Customers range from doctors, lawyers to soldiers, willing to pay large sums of money.
In Europe, Latvia has a "hourly husband rental" service due to a serious shortage of men . The ratio of women in Latvia is 15.5% higher than men, 3 times higher than the average of the European Union (EU). Women have to find intermediary platforms, for just a few euros, to hire "golden hands" to help with housework that is usually done by men such as repairs, plumbing or TV installation.
