Three health 'hot spots' for young children during Tet that parents often overlook.

Sweets, sugary drinks, staying up late, and traveling extensively during the Lunar New Year holiday are the reasons for the surge in pediatric cases.

Tet is a time when children eagerly anticipate lucky money, parties, and family trips. However, the sudden changes in diet, daily routines, and schedules often lead to many children being hospitalized due to digestive disorders, respiratory illnesses, or accidents at home.

Ensuring food safety - the foundation of disease prevention during Tet (Lunar New Year).

According to doctors at Children's Hospital 2, the cause is not due to the "Tet atmosphere," but mainly to the sudden changes in diet, sleep patterns, and living environment. Without proper preparation, small disruptions in daily life can significantly affect children's health, especially those under 5 years old.

Young children have relatively sensitive digestive systems. During the Lunar New Year holiday, food is often prepared in large quantities and consumed over several consecutive meals. If not stored properly, food can easily become contaminated.

Parents should prioritize thoroughly cooked food and limit raw or undercooked meals. Food, especially meat, seafood, and dishes with sauces, should not be left at room temperature for too long. In addition, giving children too many sweets, candies, and sugary drinks can cause bloating and digestive problems.

An important but often overlooked principle is to wash your hands with soap before eating, after using the toilet, and after contact with many people. Hand hygiene not only helps prevent diarrhea but also contributes to reducing the risk of respiratory infections caused by hands carrying germs that are transferred to the nose and mouth.

Maintaining sleep is a free "medicine" for the immune system.

According to doctors, maintaining a stable sleep schedule, eating safe food, and creating a healthy play environment are the most practical "gifts" parents can give their children in the early days of the new year.

Celebrations, dinner parties, or long trips can cause children to stay up later than usual. However, lack of sleep weakens the immune system, making children more susceptible to illness.

Experts advise parents to try to maintain a relatively stable bedtime schedule, especially for children under 3 years old. Before bedtime, limit children's exposure to strong stimulants such as electronic devices and loud noises. If the family has a long travel schedule, arrange for rest breaks in between so that children do not become too tired.

A good night's sleep is sometimes even more valuable than a lucky money envelope, because it's when a child's body regenerates energy and strengthens its immune system.

Preventing household accidents

Tet (Lunar New Year) is a time when family activities are more lively than usual. Young children are naturally curious and energetic, while their surroundings pose many potential dangers.

Parents should not allow children to play near cooking areas, boiling water, or hot oil. Avoid exposing children to fireworks or homemade firecrackers. When traveling by car, use an age-appropriate car seat; if riding a motorbike, children must wear a helmet properly.

In addition, keeping warm or protecting yourself from the sun appropriately according to the weather conditions of each region also helps reduce the risk of getting sick.

Household accidents are entirely preventable if adults proactively observe and create a safe environment for children.

Tet (Lunar New Year) doesn't have to be a "sick season" if families prepare thoroughly. By focusing on three core elements: food safety, adequate sleep, and a safe play environment, children can fully enjoy the spring festivities.
