In a small house on the hillside, Pham Ha Phuong Thao, a 4th-grade student at Thien Phu Primary School in Thien Phu commune, is carefully writing under the light of her new desk lamp. Previously, Thao's study area was just a small corner at the coffee table or sitting on the floor. But since the "Study Desk for Children" program was implemented, Thao now has her own neat and tidy study space.
"Since getting a new desk and hearing the village chief's gong, I'm no longer preoccupied with playing. I want to study hard so I can become a teacher someday," Thảo shared shyly.
Phuong Thao is just one of hundreds of students in Thien Phu commune who are benefiting from a profoundly humane initiative. The education of children in this mountainous region, which previously faced numerous obstacles from its rugged terrain to economic hardship, now has a solid foundation provided by the community.
September 2025 marks a turning point in education in Thien Phu commune. Based on the Resolution of the First Party Congress of the commune, term 2025-2030, the People's Committee of the commune issued Plan No. 63/KH-UBND on the implementation of the "Study Desk for Children" model. This is not simply a movement but a revolution in thinking.
Mr. Phan Van Dai, Chairman of the People's Committee of the commune, affirmed: "We believe that raising the intellectual level of the people is a prerequisite for sustainable poverty eradication. This model mobilizes the combined strength of all organizations down to each household to create truly meaningful learning spaces."
The model is implemented closely with "Steering Teams" in all 13 villages. In particular, the role of the commune police force and village heads is prioritized. Every night, from 7 PM to 9 PM, the authorities not only patrol to ensure security and order but also go door-to-door to remind families to create conditions and encourage their children to sit down and study.
Ms. Vi Thi Tuyet from Sang village shared: “Before, at night, the children would run around aimlessly or lie on the floor watching phones with their parents. Since the police and the village head came to remind us, my family has become more aware. Seeing my children sitting neatly at their desks to study makes me happy.”
The resources needed to implement this model are a combination of budget, social mobilization, and the people's own efforts. Recently, the "Desks for Children" donation program took place in a touching atmosphere with the support of the Provincial Red Cross Society and philanthropists. Sturdy desks and chairs, anti-myopia lamps, and new notebooks were handed directly to underprivileged children.
Mr. Pham Hong Chuong, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee and head of the model's steering committee, shared: "We have identified this as a key task to change the face of local education. It's not just about donating desks, but about creating a space, time, and habits for serious learning."
The goal of Thien Phu commune is very specific: By 2030, 100% of people of working age will have access to at least one community training course each year. The "Desks for Children" model is the first building block in creating a "learning society" in this remote and challenging area. These small desks carry the aspiration for change for a generation of children in the highlands. The lights from these "Desks for Children" become small sparks, contributing to illuminating the future of this vast mountainous region.
