Currently, a class A1 driving license is issued to drivers of two-wheeled motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of 50 to under 175 cc. A class A2 driving license is for drivers of motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of 175 cc or more and vehicles of class A1.
However, from January 1, 2025, class A1 driving licenses will only be for drivers of two-wheeled motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of over 50 to 125 cc or electric vehicles with engine capacity up to 11 kW.
People who need to change their old A1 or A2 license to a new A license, the procedure will be simpler and there is no need to retake the test.
Meanwhile, a class A driving license will allow driving two-wheeled motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of over 125cc or electric vehicles with a capacity of over 11 kW, including vehicles of the new class A1.
According to Article 58 of the 2024 Law on Road Traffic Safety and Order, previously issued A1 and A2 driving licenses can still be used normally and are not required to be changed to the new classification. This means that the old A1 and A2 driving licenses will still be valid indefinitely as stated on the license and the owner does not need to worry about being revoked or having to retake the test.
In case people need to change their old A1 or A2 license to a new A license, the procedure will be simpler, without having to retake the test. Specifically, when changing from an old A1 license to a new A license, it will be limited, only allowing to drive two-wheeled motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of less than 175 cc or electric vehicles with a capacity of less than 14 kW. Meanwhile, when changing from an old A2 license to a new A license, it will still allow to drive motorbikes of over 125 cc and vehicles of the old A1 class.
In addition, from January 1, 2025, a points management system for driving licenses will also be applied. Each driving license holder will have 12 points and points will be deducted based on the level of traffic violations. If all points are deducted, the violator will not be allowed to drive a vehicle under that driving license and must retake the traffic law knowledge test to restore points.
