Banh tet and banh chung are indispensable traditional dishes during the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. Besides the familiar way of eating them, in recent years, these cakes have been creatively prepared in many different ways, creating interesting flavors for the holiday.
According to the creator of the video, sticky rice cake (bánh tét) is usually cut and eaten plain or with pickled vegetables, sometimes fried directly in oil to change the taste. However, the fried sticky rice cake, fried in a style similar to frying bananas, is described as "exceptionally delicious" because of its novel flavor.
How do I do that?
The account holder shared the recipe, explaining that the sticky rice cake needs to be cut into small, bite-sized slices in an aesthetically pleasing way, using either a knife or string. Then, the batter for frying the cake is prepared in the same way as for frying banana cake.
Take the sliced banh tet (Vietnamese sticky rice cake) and dip it into the prepared batter, then deep-fry it in hot oil, just like frying banana fritters. Once the cake is firm, remove it, pat it dry, and then dip it again in the batter mixture for a second frying.
"Do the same for the third frying. By this time, the cake will have puffed up and turned golden brown, so take it out immediately. This is the first time in my life I've fried banh tet (Vietnamese sticky rice cake) this way, and I was surprised it puffed up like a banana cake – it looked so appetizing."
Break open the fried sticky rice cake and you'll see a wobbly lump of fat inside. The outer layer is crispy, while the sticky rice inside is soft and fragrant. This dish is so delicious, and I only just discovered it now. This Tet holiday, if any of you have sticky rice cakes at home and don't know how to make them in a new and interesting way, you can try this method – you'll be hooked!
