Over the past 65 years, the special solidarity and friendship between the Vietnamese and Cuban peoples has been constantly consolidated and strengthened, and the press has played a very important role in cultivating and spreading that loyal and steadfast relationship.
In an interview with VNA reporters in Havana on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations (December 2, 1960 - December 2, 2025), President of the Cuban Journalists Association Ricardo Ronquillo Bello said that the relationship between the two countries has a special foundation in journalism. Starting with National Hero José Martí, in the 19th century when there was no development of new technologies, no technological conveniences today, he was able to give such a beautiful and accurate description of the Vietnamese people, through the famous work "A Walk on the Land of the Annamese" praising the patriotism and hard-working spirit of the Vietnamese people.
Since the 20th century, the resistance against the United States has received special attention from Cuban journalists who have contributed to the world's understanding of the war. Among them are journalists such as Santiago Álvarez and Marta Rojas, whose writings helped raise international awareness and opposition to the US war in Vietnam.
In particular, the late female journalist Marta Rojas fought alongside the guerrillas on the front lines, participated in combat, and was the last journalist to interview beloved President Ho Chi Minh .
The Cuban press has always accompanied the Vietnamese people throughout the years of war for independence and national reunification, as well as the cause of national construction and development of the Vietnamese people today.
In recent years, press and media cooperation between the two countries has been continuously strengthened, with the exchange of working delegations to share professional experiences in the tasks of information, propaganda, and protection of the Party's ideological foundation, as well as to jointly disseminate and spread the image of the country and people of Vietnam and Cuba, and above all, the special brotherly relationship to readers around the world.
In the current digital age, Vietnam and Cuba need to further promote press and media cooperation to counter hostile rhetoric, manipulation, information lies, the use of technology to influence social strata, reduce trust in the Party's leadership and weaken the prestige of the socialist political system.
The cooperation agreement between the Cuban Journalists' Union and the Vietnam Journalists' Association, signed in 2015, is a legal framework to bring the two countries closer together, not only in spirit or symbolism, but also in practice, to face together common challenges in the digital age.
Journalist Ricardo Ronquillo Bello assessed that the practical experience of Vietnamese press in applying artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and prevent false information is very valuable for Cuba, especially at the present time, when Cuba is facing countless difficulties due to the US embargo./.
