At the workshops within the framework of the 2023 National Press Festival, Mr. Le Quoc Minh, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association affirmed that digital transformation has been and is an inevitable trend taking place strongly in most socio-economic fields today. As a field that responds sensitively to all fluctuations in socio-economic life, the press and media need to take the lead in the national digital transformation.

The application of AI in journalism promotes innovation, develops technical solutions using AI and creates new technologies to provide accurate and timely information to the community, improves quality, transparency in communication, researches and creates many suitable journalistic works.

In fact, AI applications in journalism are not limited to writing or editing content, but can be used to capture user behavior, suggest suitable content, help readers access rich information and keep them staying with the newspaper longer.

Selective Reference

Associate Professor, Dr. Do Thi Thu Hang, Head of the Professional Department, Vietnam Journalists Association, said that although AI application software has many outstanding features, it is only a tool that journalists must learn how to master and use for their work.

Ms. Hang noted that AI can be a powerful tool for editing and producing “automated journalism”, but cannot be considered a replacement for actual reporters. AI has no political sensitivity, no ideals, no humanity, no social responsibility and no journalistic ethics.

The risk of using fake data and news in journalistic works is very high if content management in the newsroom does not keep up with the development of digital technology . In the context that the legal corridor for digital journalism in Vietnam has not kept up with reality, legal problems, threats to media security, copyright infringement cases, debates about journalistic ethics, social responsibility of journalism when applying AI... are major challenges.

“Automated journalism”

Today, many major news organizations around the world are applying AI in innovative ways that can help free up newsroom resources to focus on more important journalism tasks like reporting and editing – the jobs that humans do best.

The Washington Post has been experimenting with automated reporting (also known as “robot journalism” or “robot journalism”) using its Heliograf smart software, which debuted in the summer of 2016 with coverage of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Heliograf software aggregates news by analyzing data about sports. This information is then collated, compared with relevant terms and added to create a story that can be published on different platforms. The software can help journalists spot anomalies in the data.

Throughout the Games, Heliograf updated information related to scores and medal totals in real time, freeing up journalists’ time to “free up” and create other news content.

Often focused on breaking news rather than in-depth reporting, AP is a news agency that is using AI to its advantage. AI helps optimize their news production process.

AP first used AI to create news content in 2013 to collect data and write sports and finance articles. Today, AP uses NewsWhip to update trending stories on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn.

Along with tracking news, NewsWhip can analyze real-time or historical periods ranging from 30 minutes to three years and provide reporters with daily reports.

Bloomberg uses an AI called Cyborg to help generate thousands of stories based on companies' quarterly earnings reports. Cyborg can dissect a financial report as it comes in and instantly return a story that includes the most relevant facts and figures.

Forbes uses an AI-powered CMS (content management system) platform called Bertie, which is specifically designed for its in-house newsroom, including journalists, professional contributors, and partners. Bertie provides them with real-time trending topics, suggests better headlines, and relevant images.

The Interplay Between Journalists and AI

In Vietnam, the Ministry of Information and Communications encourages journalists and press agencies to use "domestic" AI software such as: VNPT edig document digitization service, VNPT's Smart RPA tool, Viettel AI open platform, Viettel OCR, IONE - Automatic information recognition and extraction solution, VietOCR...

Ho Chi Minh City Television recently initially tested the Chat GPT application in producing technology television reports.

AI can be a powerful tool for automated journalism and editing. When used properly, AI can help maximize output in newsrooms. But AI cannot replace the live labor of journalists in the field.

With the digital newsroom model, integrating more intelligent AI systems, humans and AI still have to work together to practice journalism effectively, save time and costs, keep up with the scale of global media, and at the same time minimize the negative aspects of technology that AI can encounter.
