The sound of gongs extends the stream of cultural heritage.
For generations, the sound of gongs has never been absent from the traditional rituals of the M'nong people. The sounds, sometimes low, sometimes high, sometimes leisurely, sometimes rapid, seem to tell the story of the village, the mountains, and an ancient culture. Mr. Dieu Mbrang, the village elder of Ja Lu A, shared: “Gong playing is an ancient custom of the M'nong people. The M'nong play gongs to celebrate with their fellow villagers and also to connect with spirits and ancestors.”
Mr. Dieu Duc, from Ja Lu B village, is the fifth generation to preserve an ancient gong set passed down through many generations of his family. This ancient gong set is a great asset left by his ancestors to be passed down to future generations. "Whenever there's a festival, wedding, or celebration in the village, I bring out the gongs to play. I also teach my children and grandchildren how to play each gong piece and know the names of each gong to preserve the cultural traditions of the M'nong people," Mr. Dieu Duc shared.
To prevent the decline of gong culture, in 2024, the Quang Tan Commune Youth Union established the Ja Lu Youth Gong Club. The club has 15 members and meets three times a month on weekends. Nguyen Tien Toi, Secretary of the Quang Tan Commune Youth Union, said: “The Commune Youth Union recognizes that preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, including gong culture, is a very important task. Therefore, the Commune Youth Union established the Ja Lu Youth Gong Club to create an environment for young people to participate in activities, practice, and promote the beautiful culture of the M'nong ethnic group.”

Notably, the club not only helps young people better understand their ethnic traditions, but also creates a healthy environment, helping them stay away from social vices. Ms. Thi Nghiem, Secretary of the Youth Union branch in Ja Lu B village, said: “After the Youth Gong Club was established, many union members and young people participated in training very actively. Through this, they understand more about their ethnic culture, have a healthy playground, and together preserve the gong music of the M'nong people.”
