Referee suspended indefinitely for forcing player to stand in hailstorm for 42 more minutes of injury time

On March 14, the match in which Palmaflor defeated Blooming 3-2 became the focus of Bolivian football when there were 42 minutes of extra time and only ended when the clock reached the 132nd minute.

According to the AP news agency, referee Julio Gutierrez spent 17 minutes reviewing the video of the second goal of the home team Palmaflor. After the decision was made, a fight broke out, causing the match to be interrupted for quite a while, leading to two red cards for the away team for Menacho and Vaca.

However, the Bolivian referees still considered the 42 minutes of extra time an unreasonable decision by Mr. Gutierrez. In addition, the two penalties that referee Julio gave to the home team were also factors that caused the match to become out of control.

More importantly, the players had to play 132 minutes in very bad weather conditions. The heavy rain made the pitch slippery, posing a high risk of injury. On the evening of March 15, the decision was made by the disciplinary committee, referee Julio and 6 match officials were suspended indefinitely.

Blooming FC posted on Twitter criticizing match officials for putting their players at risk of serious injury by “playing continuously for too long”.

Palmaflor CEO and former Bolivian President Evo Morales has accused officials of acting suspiciously, while praising the team for winning despite the complicated match.

In the history of world football, 42 minutes is also a record for the amount of extra time. This record previously belonged to the match between Al Shabab and Al Ittihad in the Palestine Premier League. The reason for this incident was due to a lighting problem on the field. When the lights went out, the Organizing Committee had to restart the system. However, the technical room manager was… away. Everyone had to wait for about 40 minutes for this manager to appear.

The second-highest recorded injury time was the 2019 League Cup clash between Burton Albion and Bournemouth, which saw 28 minutes of injury time due to power outages three times.
