On November 13, the British television and radio group BBC announced that Chairman Samir Shah had sent a personal letter of apology to US President Donald Trump for editing a video that caused misunderstanding in one of his speeches.
The apology comes after the BBC admitted editing President Trump's speech to supporters to create the false impression that he called for "violent action" before a mob stormed Capitol Hill more than four years ago. The controversial speech was aired in the documentary "Panorama."
BBC Director General Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness resigned on November 9 following allegations of misleading editing of the US leader's speech. The BBC said it would not rebroadcast the "Panorama" documentary.
Despite admitting to editing errors and expressing regret over the way the video was edited, the BBC has ruled out any compensation for Mr Trump.
In a statement, the BBC stressed that it strongly disagreed with this as a basis for a libel claim. BBC lawyers have sent a response to Mr Trump's legal team, who have previously threatened to sue for $1 billion.
The BBC also said it was internally investigating a second incident in which a speech by Mr Trump was also edited to appear misleading.
This edited content was broadcast on Newsnight in June 2022./.
