Emergency surgery to save pregnant mother and baby stabbed in the abdomen - Photo: Hospital

According to doctors, the baby boy is now 11 days old, is breathing fresh air (he has been weaned off the ventilator) and is being fed milk through a gastric tube 8 times a day. The wounds on his left arm and left thigh have healed..., and is being monitored and cared for at the neonatal department, Can Tho Children's Hospital.

The baby's mother, Ms. NTKA (21 years old, in Phong Dien commune, Can Tho city), recovered from her abdominal wounds and was discharged by doctors at Can Tho Central General Hospital on November 28.

Previously, on November 21, pregnant woman NTKA was taken to the emergency room at Can Tho Central General Hospital in a very critical situation. At 36 weeks pregnant, she was stabbed in the abdomen by a young lottery ticket seller for no reason.

Immediately, the hospital activated the internal red alert procedure to save the mother and child who suffered a very serious penetrating abdominal wound. At this time, the mother was in shock from severe blood loss.

The mother was lethargic, her skin was pale, her pulse was fast and weak, and her blood pressure dropped deeply. There was a sharp wound (4 x 2cm in size) on the left hip, the omentum was exposed, bleeding profusely, her abdomen was stiff, and the bottom of the wound could not be determined... threatening the lives of both mother and baby.

Immediately, the internal red alert procedure was activated, emergency first aid was performed and many specialties were mobilized at the same time: Emergency, obstetrics, general surgery, orthopedics, anesthesia and resuscitation for urgent consultation.

At the same time, the pregnant woman was taken straight to the operating room. The obstetrics team opened the abdomen and found a large amount of blood clots and diluted blood inside. On the left side of the uterus, there was a hole about 4cm long, along with many injuries to the small intestine.

Doctors performed a cesarean section, a baby boy weighing 2,300g was urgently taken out of the mother's womb, the baby's left arm and thigh had penetrating wounds, the orthopedic trauma team intervened during the surgery to stop the bleeding.

After the cesarean section, the team continued to suture the uterus and perform intestinal anastomosis, urgently stopped bleeding, cleaned the abdomen, and placed a drain for monitoring.

According to the doctors involved in this spectacular emergency, the entire surgery was a race against time, with coordinated efforts between various specialties to save both. Because the mother was 36 weeks pregnant, the pressure of continuous blood loss could threaten the lives of both mother and child. During the emergency surgery, the mother was transfused with 11 units of blood and blood products.

After receiving emergency treatment to stop the bleeding from the stab wound, the boy was transferred to Can Tho Children's Hospital for monitoring and treatment.

When the baby was born prematurely at 36 weeks, he was groaning, had poor lung ventilation, and had a weak pulse. The neonatologists immediately intubated him, administered a ventilator, treated him for shock, transfused him with blood, and administered a tetanus shot to save the baby boy.
