Recently, the Provincial General Hospital has been continuously performing open heart surgeries at a stable frequency. This is not only the professional effort of the surgical team but also the result of a systematic and long-term training process of the provincial health sector. In November, doctors from the Cardiovascular Center of the Provincial General Hospital, with the support of experts, performed 2 rounds of open heart surgeries (November 1-2 and November 15-16) for 6 patients. The doctors performed techniques such as mitral valve replacement, mitral valve repair, aortic valve replacement and atrial septal defect patching for the patients.

The open heart surgery team of the Provincial General Hospital performed heart valve replacement for the patient.
One of the notable cases is patient Tran Thi Cam N (41 years old, Cam Pha ward) who was hospitalized with a diagnosis of left atrial myxoma and heart failure. This is one of the high causes of sudden death due to the risk of heart valve compression, obstructing blood flow through the mitral valve, making it impossible for blood to circulate to nourish the body, especially the brain, with a dangerous prognosis if not operated on promptly. After being carefully consulted by a cardiologist, the patient agreed to surgery and the tumor removal was performed successfully.
Another case is patient Pham Thi T (62 years old, Ha Lam ward) was diagnosed by the doctor with mitral valve stenosis, moderate mitral valve regurgitation, moderate tricuspid regurgitation with progression of heart failure, atrial fibrillation on the background of a previous stroke. The surgical team performed mechanical mitral valve replacement and tricuspid valve repair with valve ring. The remaining patients all suffered from heart valve diseases, often fatigued, chest pain, shortness of breath, which worsened with exertion. All patients undergoing heart surgery this time had safe surgery, stable health and were discharged from the hospital afterwards.

Patients after heart surgery receive intensive care in the post-operative room of the Provincial General Hospital.
In order to be able to routinely perform open heart surgery, the most difficult technique in the field of surgery, the Provincial General Hospital has spent many years focusing on training human resources. The team of doctors, nurses, and technicians have participated in specialized training courses, studied at major cardiovascular centers, and received technical transfer from central experts.
Since 2016, the hospital has continued to implement open heart surgery techniques. Since the beginning of 2025, the hospital has successfully performed 9 open heart surgeries, maintaining a stable frequency of 2-5 surgeries per month. To ensure the safety of each surgery, the hospital's Board of Directors has chaired meetings with the cardiac surgery team to develop a detailed surgical plan, fully review drugs, supplies and plans to handle possible situations. The surgery team always strictly adheres to professional procedures from screening, assessing cardiopulmonary function, anesthesia - resuscitation, operating the extracorporeal heart-lung machine system to post-operative care.
Doctor CKII Nguyen Tien Dung, Deputy Director of the Provincial General Hospital, said: “With heart surgeries, we always put patient safety first. The surgical team must coordinate smoothly and prepare fully from technique to equipment. Thanks to the strict process, recent surgeries have had good results and low complication rates.”
In the coming time, the Provincial General Hospital will continue to focus on developing in-depth and synchronously both the fields of surgery and cardiovascular intervention; moving towards implementing minimally invasive surgeries for patients with heart valve replacement, minimal intervention surgery, coronary artery bypass, hybrid techniques (combining endovascular intervention and open surgery)... At the same time, promoting training and professional cooperation with major cardiovascular centers at home and abroad, enhancing international integration. In particular, focusing on strengthening the team of cardiovascular specialists for the hospital's second facility (Hoanh Bo ward) to further improve the capacity of examination, screening and initial treatment for local people.
Mastering open heart surgery not only demonstrates the capacity of provincial hospitals, but also helps significantly reduce referral pressure, reduce treatment costs and shorten patient waiting times for surgery. This is a practical, direct benefit that Quang Ninh people are enjoying every day.
