On November 14, Thu Duc Regional General Hospital (HCMC) organized the 2025 Science and Technology Conference with the theme "Capacity Improvement - Comprehensive Development - Specialized Orientation".

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Cao Tan Phuoc - Director of Thu Duc Regional General Hospital - said that after putting the new 1,000-bed facility into operation (April 2025), the hospital now receives more than 3,000 outpatient visits per day.

In particular, the inpatient capacity has increased from 600-700 beds to 800-850 patients per day, sometimes even experiencing a local shortage of beds. The hospital performs over 50 surgeries per day.

"The number of inpatients and outpatients has increased, although not dramatically, but the increase is about 10-15%. This shows the strong investment of the health sector, the maximum utilization of facilities and equipment in the new building, and at the same time shows the growing trust of patients when having a new facility," said Mr. Phuoc.

Also according to Mr. Phuoc, the hospital currently has more than 50% Inpatients and outpatients register for health insurance at the hospital. The remaining 50% are patients with health insurance from other places, including areas such as Binh Duong, Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old).

Due to the hospital's location in the Thu Duc medical cluster, which is the gateway connecting Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces, the number of patients from neighboring areas coming for examination is increasing.

Dr. Ho Thanh Phong - Head of General Planning Department, Thu Duc Regional General Hospital - said that the hospital has an important strategic location, being the key medical facility at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City.

Because it borders Dong Nai, Binh Duong, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old) provinces, it is easy to receive seriously ill patients transferred from other provinces.

This area has about 1 - 2 million people, dense traffic, traffic accidents and risk of serious injury from provincial routes.

According to the development orientation, Thu Duc Regional General Hospital will become a complete Grade I general hospital (with a trauma center) in the eastern region of the city and neighboring provinces in the Southeast region, striving to reach international standards in a number of specialties (cardiovascular intervention, surgery...).

With the focus on organizing a trauma center model, this is completely appropriate because each major hospital cluster needs a trauma emergency center. Currently, the eastern gateway of the city does not have any trauma center.

"The implementation of a trauma emergency center at the hospital will help reduce the load on the central line and shorten the golden time for trauma emergency in the Eastern region," said Dr. Phong.

Doctor Phong added that the hospital currently has comprehensive support from 7 end-line hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City to support the hospital in developing its specialties such as: Gia Dinh People's Hospital, Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, Eye Hospital...

With a new, well-invested facility, modern equipment and the "backing" of 7 end-line hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, Thu Duc Regional General Hospital promises to become a reliable destination for people in the Eastern region and neighboring provinces such as Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old), reducing the load on the city's central hospitals.

Huge investment for 3 gateway hospitals

Previously, from the beginning of 2021, the Prime Minister approved the investment policy for the project to build 3 new hospitals, including: Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital, Cu Chi Regional General Hospital, and Thu Duc Regional General Hospital.

The capital for the three hospital projects comes from the Ho Chi Minh City budget. Of which, Thu Duc Regional General Hospital has the largest total investment of VND1,915 billion, Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital VND1,895 billion, and Cu Chi Regional General Hospital VND1,854 billion.

In September 2023, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council approved the proposal on investment policy for the project to purchase equipment for these three gateway hospitals with a total capital of more than VND 4,300 billion.

With this project, people in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces can rest assured about the environment, quality of examination and treatment, the quantity and quality of examination are improved, attracting qualified and professional staff to the hospital.
