Besiktas fired coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

(Dan Tri) - Besiktas has parted ways with coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a shocking 0-1 defeat to Lausanne in the early morning of August 29, thereby being eliminated from the European arena with a total score of 1-2 in the Conference League play-off round.

The decision to sack Solskjaer was made by Besiktas shortly after the former Man Utd captain's post-match press conference. A statement from the club stated: "Our contract with coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a decision taken at a board meeting.

After the meeting, our president, Serdal Adalı, thanked Solskjaer for his contributions so far."

Solskjaer joined Besiktas in January on an 18-month contract, marking his first managerial role since leaving Old Trafford in November 2021. In 29 games in charge of the Turkish side, he has won 15.

Solskjaer's start to life at Besiktas was impressive, losing just one of his first nine games in all competitions. His improved form saw the club finish fourth last season, qualifying for the Europa League. However, Besiktas were knocked out by Shakhtar Donetsk in the third qualifying round of the Europa League, forcing them to drop down to the Conference League.

After beating Shamrock Rovers 7-3 on aggregate, Besiktas drew 1-1 in Lausanne in the first leg in Switzerland. However, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji's only goal late in the first half of the return leg, coupled with Felix Uduokhai's straight red card early in the second half, ended the home side's hopes.

This is the first time Besiktas have missed out on a European competition group stage appearance since the 2022/23 season. Last season, they reached the Europa League group stage but were eliminated after winning just three of their eight games.

Solskjaer's abrupt departure contrasts with his promising start to life at the club, as he said after a 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao in his first game: "It's the team spirit, the togetherness. This is a real team, and it's one of the best feelings I've had in my career as a manager. It's special. I know it's been difficult. Now let's calm down and move on. But I have to say thank you and congratulations."

Despite still having 11 months left on his original contract with Besiktas, Solskjaer is once again a free manager.
