In Jinshan Temple in Hebi City, Henan Province, China, there are two ancient wells that are more than 1,000 years old. The two wells are only a few steps apart, but one side has bitter water, the other side has sweet water.

Nearly 10 years ago, villagers were surprised to discover a large amount of coins and gold jewelry while cleaning the bottom of a well.

Locals say this is the ancient well in the folk legend of the White Snake and the Green Snake from over 1,000 years ago. The story tells of a love story between a man and a snake during the Northern Song Dynasty, which took place at Jinshan Temple, Jin Mountain, Baixa Cave, and Moshan Mountain Range - a place that still exists in Hebi today.

After the abbot of Kim Son pagoda, monk Phap Hai, imprisoned the white snake forever at the bottom of the Loi Phong Pagoda in the pagoda, in memory of her husband, she turned into spring water, which is the bitter well water today.

However, well experts checked and found that the freshwater well was three meters deeper than the bitterwater well. The bitterwater contained large amounts of magnesium and sulfate, while the freshwater did not. It turned out that the water sources of the two wells were different.

Bitter wells are formed from surface water. Fresh water wells are formed from groundwater deep underground, through many layers of filters in the mountains, removing magnesium and sulfate. This is the reason why two wells taste so different even though they are only a few steps apart.

Regarding the gold and silver in the well, historians say it is related to local marriage customs. In ancient times, people believed that the water in the well was the tears of the White Snake, and also believed in the touching love story between a human and a demon. Since then, every married couple would come to the well to worship and throw their gold and silver into the well, praying for a happy marriage until old age.
