The mysterious disappearance of 71-year-old Lorna McSorley in the Ghost Mountains region of South Africa, which has lasted for four months, is exposing dark underbelly issues regarding security at remote tourist destinations. What began as a package holiday is now being investigated by private detectives as a murder case linked to a local witchcraft ritual.

A fateful journey in the sacred mountains.

On the afternoon of September 27, 2025, Lorna McSorley and her husband, Leon Probert (81 years old), checked into the Ghost Mountain Inn resort. This was a stop on their South Africa tour organized by TUI. However, just five days later, Lorna disappeared without a trace during a sightseeing hike.

Based on data from the hotel's security cameras, the couple was last seen at approximately 2:30 PM that same day. They were standing at the reception desk with an A4-sized map, marking their destination as the lake area which had a crocodile warning sign. Feeling tired, Leon decided to return to the hotel early, while Lorna continued her journey alone to observe the wildlife.

The last witness to see her was Koos Prinsloo, a local farmer. He said he encountered the tourist at 3:15 p.m. when she stopped to ask for directions. Despite being warned that she had gone in the wrong direction and being offered a ride, Lorna refused and continued walking in the opposite direction.

The search campaign and digital clues.

At 5:30 p.m. that same day, when his wife did not return after a trip that was expected to last only 90 minutes, Leon reported it to the authorities. A large-scale search operation involving police, park rangers, sniffer dogs, and drones was immediately launched. However, the only result obtained after months of searching was a tattered map left at the scene.

Notably, private investigators extracted network data within a 50-meter radius of the map's location. The results showed that at approximately 4:45 PM, three unfamiliar phone numbers converged at that location for about 15 minutes before splitting off in different directions. One of the WhatsApp accounts associated with these numbers used a big cat as its profile picture – a symbol often seen in local extremist spiritual activities.

The hidden aspects of local muti rituals.

Zulu cultural experts believe the incident bears the hallmarks of the trafficking of human body parts for "muti" rituals. This term refers to medicines made from plants or animals, but in some extreme cases, healers believe the most potent mixture must include human body parts.

Jacob Sabelo Ntshangase, a cultural expert, said that in this region, there is still a blind belief that body parts of certain groups will bring power and wealth. Victims are often targeted when traveling alone in remote areas.

In the town of Mkuze, many residents believe that Lorna became a target because of her solitude. According to a local official, at least 10 similar disappearances have been recorded in the area since 2022, raising concerns about safety for tourists exploring the unspoiled mountain regions of South Africa.

Practical information for tourists

  • Location: Ghost Mountain area, Mkuze town, South Africa.
  • Safety warning: Never separate from the group or walk alone in wilderness areas, especially in the late afternoon.
  • Note: Always follow the directions of forest rangers and local people regarding safe routes.
