When ranked by economic region, high-ranking higher education institutions continue to be concentrated in the Red River Delta and Southeast regions, although there has been a slight decrease in number. Meanwhile, the North Central region, the South Central Coast, the Central Highlands, and the Northern Midlands and Mountains region recorded positive growth.
By subject group, multidisciplinary universities accounted for 51% of the top 100, an increase compared to the previous year, confirming the trend of integration and diversification of training. Some specialized fields such as Engineering, Health, and Economics showed a slight decline.
By type of institution, public higher education institutions still dominate (83%), but the proportion of private higher education institutions has increased slightly, reflecting the gradual growth of the non-public sector.
The Organizing Committee stated that the publication of the VNUR-2026 Ranking not only provides guidance information for students, parents, and employers, but also creates pressure for continuous improvement among educational institutions.
In 2026, VNUR reviewed 237 higher education institutions in Vietnam that offer bachelor's degree programs or higher. Of these, 193 institutions had complete publicly available data as required to be included in the ranking.
Data was collected from various independent sources, including annual reports, admission plans, data from international rankings such as QS, THE, and ARWU; accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Training, the QS Stars and UPM ranking systems; scientific databases such as Scopus and Web of Science; data on patents, scientific journals, facilities, and electronic libraries, etc.
The ranking is based on a set of standards comprising 6 groups of standards and 18 criteria, with weights adjusted to ensure balance and objectivity.
In this system, the "Recognized Quality" standard has the highest weight (30%), followed by "Teaching" (25%), "Publication of scientific articles" (20%), "Scientific and technological tasks and inventions" (10%), "Learner quality" (10%), and "Facilities" (5%).
