Gender equality promotes sustainable development.

Gender equality is one of the important pillars of sustainable development, especially in ethnic minority and mountainous areas – where the province is still heavily impacted by difficult economic conditions and long-standing gender stereotypes and customs. Over the years, through the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, Tuyen Quang province has implemented a comprehensive communication campaign on gender equality, gradually creating significant changes in the awareness and actions of the community.

During the period 2021-2025, communication work has been identified by Tuyen Quang province as a continuous task in the implementation of the National Target Program for socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Communication is a channel for providing information and also a fundamental solution to change "mindsets and practices," gradually eliminating gender stereotypes and outdated cultural customs that directly affect women and children.

Project 8 - Implementing gender equality and addressing urgent issues for women and children - was carried out with many practical contents, with communication placed at the center. Messages about the rights of women and children; preventing and combating domestic violence; reducing child marriage and consanguineous marriage; encouraging men to share responsibilities in the family… were regularly and continuously disseminated at the grassroots level.

Chairman of Thanh Thuy Commune People's Committee, Le Manh Dung, shared: "In recent times, Thanh Thuy commune has implemented comprehensive and systematic communication on gender equality, especially on reducing child marriage and consanguineous marriage. Through communication conferences and community activities, many important contents about the rights and roles of women and children have been directly conveyed, in accordance with the local conditions. As a result, people's awareness has gradually improved, many outdated customs have been gradually eliminated, contributing to building prosperous and progressive families and promoting sustainable development in the commune."

A notable feature is the diverse forms of communication organized to suit each region and ethnic group. Besides conferences and direct training courses, the province has produced numerous documentaries and special features, and maintained propaganda programs in the Tay, Dao, Cao Lan, and Mong languages, helping to convey information to the people in a relatable and easily understandable way. In addition, the compilation and distribution of leaflets, handbooks, banners, and slogans promoting gender equality, marriage, and family have been widely implemented in villages and hamlets in ethnic minority areas, contributing to raising awareness and creating consensus within the community.

Women are supported in participating in livelihood models, cooperatives, and production groups; they receive training in family economic management skills and business entrepreneurship. This not only contributes to improving income but also gradually enhances women's status in the family and society. Girls receive more attention in education and healthcare, gradually narrowing the gender gap in accessing basic social services.

Evaluating the effectiveness of gender equality communication efforts, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Director of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions of the province, emphasized the crucial role of communication in changing community awareness: For ethnic minority areas, for gender equality to be truly effective, communication must be one step ahead, close to the people, and appropriate to the customs, traditions, and language of each ethnic group. When people understand the benefits of gender equality for their own families, the change will be more sustainable. The province particularly focuses on promoting the role of village elders, community leaders, and influential people in the community. These are important "bridges" that bring policies and guidelines on gender equality to the people in a persuasive and effective way.
