Sharing with war correspondent Denis Grigoryuk, an anonymous Russian assault soldier said that a machine gunner of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), who fell asleep at the post, helped the Russian army penetrate the solid defense line in the city of Avdeevka.
“There was a machine gunner sitting at the pier post. He fell asleep from fatigue and our unit passed through that location, which decided the whole outcome of the battle for Avdeevka. Our unit cut off the Ukrainian supply line, attacked the Cheburashka position all day long,” the Russian soldier said.

The story is told as servicemen and war correspondents drive along the road leading to Avdeevka, which is controlled by the Russian army. At the train station, Russian soldiers point out the location of a Ukrainian machine gunner who had fallen asleep. Russian assault units neutralized the soldier before storming the AFU rear areas in the city.
That very night, Russian units broke into the area and took up key positions, almost cutting Avdeevka in half. The situation became more complicated for the AFU as they had nowhere to hide as there were no prepared positions or trenches in the city.
“AFU tried to gain footholds in the houses, but Russian assault units were reinforced. Russian forces gradually overwhelmed the enemy and Avdeevka fell,” the Russian soldier added.
On February 26, Russian troops took control of the village of Lastochkino near Avdeevka. Units of the Russian Central Operational Group took part in the battles in this direction. Thus, essentially the entire Avdeevka area and its environs changed hands.
Speaking about the battle for Avdeevka, AFU Sergeant Dmitry Dyadchuk also mentioned the breakthrough in Avdeevka's defense. After the Ukrainian forces withdrew from the city, the soldier waited a week to surrender to the Russian army. The Ukrainian soldier arrived in Avdeevka a week before the attack began. The soldier said that the AFU attack was practically hopeless. His unit was almost completely killed. When retreating, the survivors were stopped by fire from the AFU rearguard.

Dmitry Dyadchuk added that during the maneuver, the entire unit did not know that it was being pushed to Avdeevka. The unit’s command did not specify exactly where the soldiers were fighting. They limited the information to the fact that they were sent to the Donetsk region and had to stop the Russian advance. According to the soldier’s observations, the AFU lost many soldiers in the battle for the city of Avdeevka.
The Ukrainian soldier described the retreat from Avdeevka as chaotic and untimely. In particular, the Ukrainian army received the order to retreat late. Most of the Ukrainian soldiers in the city were stranded because they were not allowed to carry radios. He and many other survivors did not know about the AFU withdrawal and did not know where they were to withdraw from the front.
According to the latest information from the Avdeevka front, the Russian Army is gradually taking control of Tolneke and Berdychi. This step will put an end to the possibility of the AFU counterattack on the city of Avdeevka.
