Meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development chaired by Minister Le Minh Hoan |
After SGGP Newspaper and a number of press agencies reported on the situation of poultry meat and foreign meat products, animal organs being allowed to be imported massively into the Vietnamese market (along with illegal discarded poultry - live chickens from Thailand to the South and Central regions of our country), leading to a sharp drop in domestic pork and chicken prices, farmers at risk of bankruptcy, on May 21, in Hanoi , Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan chaired a meeting with functional units and the press to clarify related issues.
At the meeting, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) Nguyen Thu Thuy reported that since the beginning of the year, only about 4,000 tons of chicken feet and more than 400 tons of chicken and duck breeds have been imported.
However, according to a recent dispatch sent to the Prime Minister , the Vietnam Poultry Association (VIPA) said that recently, many livestock by-products with very cheap prices such as poultry feet, heads, necks, wings, skin, gizzards, especially frozen discarded laying hens with their heads, feet and organs removed, are still imported in very large quantities into the Vietnamese market as food for people.
Farmers and poultry farm owners are constantly facing difficulties due to low prices and a massive influx of foreign meat into the country. |
Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry Duong Tat Thang said that the low price of pigs and chickens is due to production not being linked to the market. |
VIPA's dispatch also confirmed that every month, tens of thousands of tons of discarded laying hens (live chickens) are smuggled across the border into our country, seriously affecting the domestic poultry industry. In the past 5 years, the output of imported chicken meat into Vietnam has increased continuously, estimated to account for 20-25% of the total chicken meat consumed in our country.
VIPA recommends that the Government promptly issue a document banning the import of meat products from countries using growth stimulants Ractopamine and Cysteamine to protect people's health.
Regarding the situation of allowing discarded chickens of poor quality to be smuggled into Vietnam, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Health Nguyen Thu Thuy affirmed that an imported meat or by-product product present in the Vietnamese market must comply with a 5-step process and must go through a minimum negotiation process of 4 to 5 years.
Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Health Nguyen Thu Thuy speaks at the meeting |
According to the representative of the Department of Animal Health, because Vietnam is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), negotiations must follow the principle of non-discrimination against any product imported into Vietnam.
“The Department of Animal Health reviews disease records as well as the entire food safety monitoring process in the importing country. Therefore, it is inappropriate to say that products that do not meet quality standards when imported into Vietnam” - a representative of the Department of Animal Health (the agency that issues import licenses) spoke up.
However, the representative of the Department of Animal Health also affirmed that in the near future, the standards and products of the countries that Vietnam currently imports a lot will be reviewed.
After receiving the dispatch from the Vietnam Poultry Association, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recently directly signed Official Dispatch No. 426/CD-TTg dated May 18, requesting relevant ministries to prevent, detect and strictly handle cases of illegal trading and transportation of poultry and poultry products across the border into Vietnam.
Sharing with the press at this meeting, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan said that the market and prices are always unstable, we must gradually get used to these things, because according to the market mechanism, it is never stable.
