Riverbank erosion, people build more than 10,000 sandbags to stop the 'river god' from swallowing the village

In recent days, hundreds of households in group 11, Tinh Yen village, Thu Bon commune, Da Nang city, have been feeling uneasy as the Thu Bon river bank landslides serious, threatening their homes and gardens.

According to local residents, the Thu Bon River bank in Group 11 has been eroding for decades. However, after a prolonged period of heavy rain at the end of October, the river bank was severely damaged by the "river god". Many landslides are only about 5 meters away from residential areas, directly threatening dozens of households living close to the riverbank.

Ms. Pham Thi Than (60 years old) said that the Thu Bon river bank at group 11 is being reinforced with stone cages, but one section is reinforced and another is abandoned. "The front of my house has not been embanked yet, so it was heavily eroded during the heavy rain that lasted for many days. Seven years ago, with money borrowed from the bank, my family built a level four house 1 meter higher than the road to avoid floods. Until now, the debt has not been paid off, but the landslide is less than 7 meters from the house." - Mrs. Than complained.

Mr. Bui The Su (resident of group 11) recalls: "During the night, the river water rose and the sound of landslides made the whole neighborhood worried and unable to sleep. As soon as it was dawn, I ran out to check and discovered that the water's edge was only about 6 meters away from my house. If the embankment is not built soon, it is likely that many houses will be swept away into the river."

Chairman of Thu Bon Commune People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Son said that in the face of the landslide situation on the Thu Bon River bank at Group 11, in early November, the Commune People's Committee immediately sent officials to the scene to inspect, mobilized police forces, militia and people to build earth bags and cover temporary embankments to prevent the landslide from spreading.

Hundreds of people were mobilized to the landslide scene. Here, more than 10,000 sandbags were built along the Thu Bon River to prevent the terrible erosion that has made people feel insecure.

In order to protect the safety of people and property of the people of Group 11, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Thu Bon Commune has submitted a document to the People's Committee of Da Nang City and the Civil Defense Command of Da Nang City to consider supporting funding from the city budget with an amount of about 6 billion VND to build a 400m embankment to prevent emergency landslides on the Thu Bon River bank in Tinh Yen village. At the same time, it is recommended that the Central Government consider and support investment capital to complete the embankments to prevent landslides on the Thu Bon River bank with a total length of about 10km.
