Before the draw took place, FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the FIFA Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump. The US President accepted the medal and received compliments from Mr. Infantino.
After more than 1 hour and 30 minutes, the draw for the 2026 World Cup took place.
The Group of Death did not appear in the first World Cup with 48 teams. The three hosts, the United States, Mexico and Canada, were in relatively easy groups. They could advance to the knockout stage without much trouble.
Group I is considered the most attractive group with the presence of France, Senegal, Norway and the team that wins the second round of the intercontinental play-off round. The French team will have to face two opponents that are not easy to bully, Senegal and Norway. The team from Africa has many stars playing in Europe and is in the top 20 on the FIFA rankings. Meanwhile, Norway is the team that has won all 8 matches in the qualifying round. Other contenders for the title, such as Spain, Germany, England, Brazil, and Portugal, have had relatively favorable groups and will easily qualify for the group stage. Defending champions Argentina are in Group J with Austria, Jordan, and Algeria. Lionel Messi will meet his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo again in the quarter-finals if both teams finish top of their group.
The first match of the 2026 World Cup will take place between South Africa and host Mexico at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico on June 11.
